I'm going crazy with all the component and technology research and just need to ask a conceptual question to put a momentary end to the madness. I am trying to map out the audio system and need to know if this this is possible.
HDTV(SamsungLN-4692), Cable STB, PS3, HTPC - If I have the sources setup: PS3(HDMI1), Cable STB(Component), HTPC(HDMI2). Than use audio out or optical out from the TV to get audio feed to the receiver...will that work?
Also, if I'm using an audio card, does that feed the processed signal to the HDMI output on the Video Card or do I need to feed audio directly from the sound card to the receiver or tv? How does that factor in?
Modern receivers are designed to be inbetween your source components and your display.
When you select a source on the amp, it sends the picture (if there is one) and sound to the Display. The display can be set at the appropriate input from the receiver. However, the video connection from the receiver to the display isnt of much use if it is only composite as some older ones are like mine. Therefore I only send it the digital and analogue audio inputs. If you have HDMI inputs on the reciever then there will be an HDMI output for the display.
Im not sure how the HDMI GFX cards get their sound but there must be a connection from either the motherboard or capable sound card.
My motherboard has a S/PDIF output so I use that for digital surround from my HTPC to receiver and a DVI to HDMI cable for the display.

I forgot to also add that the audio outputs you mentioned on the TV can also be sent to the receiver and the TV speakers can usually be turned off. Then all sound, digital or analogue will go through the surround system and be reproduced in various formats of your desire but limited by the type of audio source and receiver capabilities.
