What is the difference between joint stereo and stereo?

Hi,
im new to this so its a simple question, with my cd's when i encode them it says mono, stereo or joint stereo. I dont want mono but whats the difference between joint stereo and stereo? And which has better quality? Thanks.

I don't want to get flamed, but here's a non-technical answer.
The JS is usually used with lower bitrate stereo mp3's (<= 128 kbps).

It compensates for the generally low BR by allocating more bits to
one channel or the other depending on their content.

CD audio is 44.1KHz, 16 bit uncompressed audio. JS does not apply to
this as far as I know.

Joint Stereo is encoded as a Mono track and the Stereo 'difference' track. It uses fewer bits because there's less repeated information. Regular Stereo wastes bits because both channels have a lot of the same info.
