I have an old LACIE DVR-104, which is simply an enclosure box with a Pioneer 104 DVD-RW drive inside and a 1394 interface on the back. The setup has worked well with a laptop I've been using. The pioneer drive works fine, but I would like to swap it out for a faster drive. The controller card inside the enclosure takes an IDE (I assume 40-wire ATA/16.7) cable from the drive and converts it to a firewire interface. Is there a way to find out the limitations of the enclosure and its controller card? If I buy a 20x DVD-RW internal drive with an Ultra DMA EIDE interface, will the old controller card choke the drive's speed? If this question belongs somewhere else, please let me know. Any help on the topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
