Hi,
I bought a sony laptop (VAIO model VGN-FE48G), which is including a DVDRAM/+-RW/+-R burner. I
generated DVDs & CD-Rs without any problem till 2
months ago... now I burn dvds successfully on my
laptop. but, I can't seem to complete a CD-R when I
try to burn pics or mp3s... There is an error that
comes up at the end of each time telling me there was
problems "finalising" the disc or "session fixation
error" in nero8.
I`ve tried it with different programs like NERO 8,
ROXIO & even with WINDOWS itself with different speed
& even with different CD-R BRANDS like TDK,HP&SONY. but
it`s just like fighting a losing battle...
Here is the log of nero8:

here is your burner:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters?DVDn...0&Search=Search
it will burn 8x DVD media only and burn CDs at 24x unless there is a firmware update to help the burner recognize 16x media (newer media) and faster burning CDs. burning DVDs or CDs on a laptop is hard enough and when you add Nero and Roxio together on the same computer..... THEY CLASH! So when you have problems with burning I would take out Roxio as it's an inferior burning software compared to Nero!
Quote: CDR code: 00 97 26 66; OSJ entry from: CMC Magnetics Corporation
use better media...... CMC Mags is crappy media to start with. When having problems use better media... try Verbatim! Those are the best CDs, IMHO.
Quote: Burn process started at 24x (3,600 KB/s)
you are burning at the maximum speed your burner can do...... try slower speed to help the burner out.
try these changes and lets hope that there isn't any more problems. I think the most important changes would be to get rid of Roxio and change your media to Verbatim and burn at slower speed!
Also when you take out Roxio.... use the Roxio Zapper to make sure there are no traces of Roxio left in your computer:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml
after which, do a computer clean up.... use CCleaner to clean your registry and do a defrag!
Usually when you can't burn a DVD and still can burn a CD or visa versa...... this is an indication of your burner going bad. If this changes does not help out...... then it might not be a software problem! It might be a hardware problem!

Roxio might not work on your set-up with Nero works on mine with no problems how you can say that Roxio is inferior to Nero is beyond me according to the excellent Uk Magazine computer shopper they prefer Roxio compared to Nero I get more problems with Nero then Roxio and yes I had the problems with Nero way before I put Roxio on my rig :)

sorry I hit your button, Killalot. It's is a known issue with Roxio that on SOME computers they interfere with one another. here's how:
Roxio suites have Packet writing programs used for RW disks. Packet writing utilities are notorious for interfering with burn processes, as the way it works is to continually poll the burner to check for new media. This prevents the burn application gaining exclusive access to the burner, and sense code errors will happen - every time. Get rid of all packet writing utilities. They are more trouble than they are worth.
Like I said..... SOME computers will have problems with it! My computer DOESN'T! I have both Nero and Roxio on my computer, but I did take out the Packet writing program that Roxio has! It's ok....... use what's good for you. But when problems arise and you have both Nero and Roxio...... take one or the other out as they SOMETIMES cause problems..... and I am not the only one who agrees with that......
Try Arniebear:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/405495#2449138
and there are many other members here that agree that Nero and Roxio DO cause problems for one another! I am only giving back what others have taught me.
I'm sorry if I pushed your buttons on Roxio, Killalot.
one more thing:
Quote: according to the excellent Uk Magazine computer shopper they prefer Roxio compared to Nero
take it from where it comes from. The magazine may be excellent... but if Roxio paid them enough they can say anything! I don't believe everything you read. I talk from experience and I learned many thing from many members here over the years! I don't go by a magazine. Do you think that I never had problems and came here directly to just spew out advice? I learned from many members here and I am proud to give back what I learned. I learned from the masters like Arniebear, Creaky, Alkohol, Kivory666, Mort81, Rotary, Binkie7, LOCOENG, ddp, BBmayo, Ireland, and many many others too long to list! I hope I don't hurt anyone feelings if I left them out. Just giving back what was learned.

Its common sense if you?ve got both programs installed and have installed packet writing applications for both programs and are running both at the same time well the shit is going to hit the fan like you rightly said packet writing software continually checks the drive so running both together is going to cause problems packet writing software is shite anyway like you pointed out so saying Roxio is inferior to Nero is a wrong assumption when its user error if you read the help files in both Roxio and Nero it tells you only run and install one packet writing application on any 1 machine at a time as not to cause conflicts and also my good friend with you coming from over the pond you don?t get computer shopper so unfortunately you wont know what an excellent and independent magazine it is and for your information roxio don?t pay them anything and I don?t always believe what I read and wile I?m thinking about it can you give me a link for the Roxio forum on AD? O I forgot there isn?t 1 that in its self tells you something and before you say more people use Nero then roxio is total garbage.

here is a more un biased account of the war between Nero and Roxio.... and that last 2 paragraph tells it all:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,138034/article.html
Quote: Factoring price into the equation, Nero starts to look like the winner again. Moving up to version 8 sets you back $50 ($80 for new buyers), while upgrading from Easy Media Creator 9 to 10 costs $70 (the full $100 price less a $30 mail-in rebate). Nero also tends to add major features in free "dot" upgrades, which makes the long-term cost of owning the Nero suite markedly lower.
In the end, I found neither suite an overly compelling upgrade, largely because I don't need any of their new features--yet. Both suites are improved, but both still need work, especially when it comes to consolidating features and, in Nero's case, improving usability. Study the new-feature lists carefully, and if you see support for a technology you really need, go for it. Otherwise, bide your time.
there is good and bad with both and some features of one program goes over the other and visa versa! Ease of use goes to Roxio but price wise goes to Nero.... both are vast improved but Nero has many more pluses over Roxio.... and Roxio has things over Nero..... but as far as which one is better..... It's a matter of opinion and there is no right or wrong! To each it's own. Use one or the other....... what ever floats your boat! Sooooooooo there is the truth!!!! and it doesn't hurt at all! It's just a matter of what you want to read into it and what you are doing! Guess what..... I still say tomato and you still say TOOOOMAAAAAAAHHHHHTOOOOOE! SAME DARN THING. And there is not right answer. Just opinions.
Also to dismiss that more people use Nero and that there is a Nero forum..... well..... it's only natural to have newbies who don't know anything ask question and they sometimes don't know how to use Nero. Nero is mostly used and there is a forum for it! Why don't you ask the MODS to start a ROXIO forum. It well might be time for it!

So why say Roxio is inferior then Nero make your mind up! Gives out the wrong message too people just because Nero is giving you trouble and you?ve got Roxio doesn?t mean it?s because you?ve Roxio installed next time you give your opinion on a subject ?software? don?t slag it off then change your mind the quote above contradicts your statement

Makes no sense to your conclusion of Roxio if you think it?s inferior to Nero why have you got it installed on your setup that says it all could bitch all day with you but got better things to get on with enjoy

My opinion is my opinion. And after using Roxio...... I DON'T LIKE IT! IMHO! I will give my opinion and it's from experience. Just because you don't like my opinion.... well... you said so! You don't like my opinion. I don't like a lot of things ....... I like many things! And you can say this out loud in America and still it's not a crime. Killalot..... I said what I meant and I didn't mean to hurt your feelings about anything. If you like Roxio over Nero..... so be it! I respect your opinion. You gave me an article about Roxio from your mag and I gave you one from mine..... anyone can read anything into it, and form opinions one way or another. This is my last reply on this subject because I don't want to comment on this anymore. And it takes away from the main subject.... which was helping aidin_b62 out. I gave advice and voiced my opinion. Sorry if you didn't like my opinion.

Yes, I followed all. except the "FIRMWARE" thing... maybe it looks funny but I`ve never heard about "FIRMWARE" before. and I don`t know what it is... by the way, I googled it and I couldn`t find a link to download FIRMWARE for my "PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K17" burner.
do you know where can I download it for PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K17?

Firmware is programming that is inserted into a programmable memory area of your drive, thus becoming a permanent part of a drive. This 'software' is called firmware and can be updated with a firmware flasher. A firmware upgrade can add new functionality to your drive. Also bug fixes and improvements are done by firmware upgrades. It also adds more media codes and write strategies to the drive to improve burning capabilities and disk recognition. Doing a firmware upgrade should only improve your drive.
Unfortunately I can't find firmware for your drive either! sorry!
