How do i format my Seagate ST340015A HDD so that my PS2 recognizes it is an HDD

i bought a Seagate HDD Model: ST340015A (40GB)so that i could have a HDD for my PS2 and download directly from a PS2 disk (FFXI). My PS2 does not recognize it has an HDD in it. I'mm thinking that i need to IDE it to my motherboard or USB it (somehow) externally in order to format it using Winhiip but im not sure if this is the correct way to do this or which version i should use. All i want to do is download from the original disks from Square Enix so that I can play FFXI usin my PS2. Can any1 help?

you cannot play FFXI without the official sony hdd. the game will only install to that hdd.
