Several weeks ago I began receiving a pop-up saying that a new version of Internet Explorer was ready to be installed.
I always CRINGE when I receive such messages because I am having no problems and, not being a computer expert, wish to keep it as simple as possible.
So I ignored the pop-up, which appeared every morning, for weeks before finally succumbing and allowing the update to be installed.
Since then I have had nothing but trouble. When I boot up, a box tells me that my profile cannot be loaded and may be corrupt and that a temporary profile will be loaded instead.
I try to change the profile and screen settings, which I can do normally, but when I log off the profile revisions, as well as everything I have done during that session, is lost and the same situation repeats every time I restart the computer.
In addition, nearly every file I had in storage is missing. I suspect that they are still on the hard drive but cannot be accessed. These include text files, still photos and video clips.
The new version of Internet Explorer itself works fine, although I prefer the one that I am used to.
I have tried using the System Restore and Disk Repair utilities to no avail.
Any suggestions? The computer is an HP pavilion 520n and the operating system is Windows xp.
Hi Beeliner,
Good ol' Microsoft up to it again. Well since you didn't say for sure what version of IE you have I'm going to assume it is IE7. So I did some fishing and came up with this from Microsoft about how to uninstall it and they "swear" you will automatically downgrade to IE6. Which you said you were happy with, I think. So here's the link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177. It sounds pretty simple but then again nothing is ever simple when Microsoft is involved. Also, I would suggest that you change some settings under Window's Update to NOT automatically install anything that comes down the pipeline. You do have a choice about the things they want you to put on your computer! I believe you can delete any of the updates in the update list that you don't want. And of course click the ones that you do want. Hope this will be of some help.
Did you try the search command in the start window ? Search for one of the missing file names and see if it turns up - you are right, they are most likely still there - you just need to find where on HDD.
For everyone that has lost a file - try www.mozy.com - Awesome, FREE online backup service. Automatic, easy, did I say FREE, backup up of 2 gigs on-line so if your disc crashes you're covered.
