Major avi subtitle issue

So I am trying to convert my DVDs to Avi's.. Specifically Xvid... using AutoGK. When I try to add subtitles to movies like Traffic and Babel using AutoGK's built in subtitle options (picking the track ripped from the DVD then running the project) none of the subtitles show up.

So I tried with external subs, but they are all off sync. The person will speak then the text till appear 5 seconds after... Not to mention ALL the subtitles are displayed, not just non-English ones.

What would be my best option for adding these subtitles? I am really starting to get annoyed with this problem.

Are you choosing the VOB or the IFO?

These subtitles will be burned into the video.
Choose the one you want. Then add job and try the preview.

That is not working, the subtitles are not displaying.

Could it be a problem with the ripped DVD files?
