Hey I got a virus that Mcafee keeps telling me it is a "joke-bluescreen.c" virus and I keep getting pop-ups for "antivirus xp 2008" Mcafee keeps saying it removes it but it does not and when I try to remove it from my programs it says it has removed it but it is still there. My desktop screen is blue with the message to download their software to get rid of it. I try to do a system restore but it has canceled out all of my back up dates. Anybody have any advice?

Hi RZMac,

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. DO NOT use yet.

Download and install SUPERAntiSpyware Free
? Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
? An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
? If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and unzip into the program's folder.)[/i]
? Under the "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences... button.
? Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
? Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
o Close browsers before scanning.
o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

? Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
? Do not run a scan just yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
? Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
? Click the Empty Selected button.
? If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
? Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
? If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
? Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
? Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
? Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
? On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
? On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
? After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
? Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
? A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
? If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.

If that doesn?t clear it up then:

Go here and follow the instructions for manually removing => xp-antivirus-2008-removal-instructions

Hi, I had exactly the same problem as described by RZMac. I was really worried at first and thought I had got some really serious spyware virus, as the 'Antivirus XP 2008' dialog box was telling me I had 3050 viruses on my computer, including things which hacked into government computers pretending to be a terrorist, etc. I had the blue screen with the message in the middle telling me to download spyware remover, and constant popups at the bottom of the screen telling me about the 3050 viruses, and my system restore was disabled with no dates before today. When I tried to get 'antivirus xp 2008' to remove the viruses, it took me to a webpage asking me to buy the software - I was canny enough not to do that!! Anyway I started thinking, if this was really spyware it was not being very discreet about it, I did a google search on 'bluescreen joke' and quickly realised that this is a scam and it is the 'Antivirus XP 2008' which is the real virus. So I followed all the instructions given by 2oldGeek and I'm pleased to say it worked. After rebooting my computer I had to click on 'last working configuration' in the intial dialog screen but after that windows loaded and all is now working OK, the only thing was that my screen was still blue! But all the antivirus stuff and popups had gone away. I reset my desktop settings and everything is working fine now. Thanks a lot for your help, 2oldGeek.

Hi olebin,

The instructions that you followed were just a pre-clean and may not have completely gotten rid of the Vundo Trojan, which is what brought you the Antivirus XP 2008.

I have just discovered a new variant of Antivirus XP 2008 that has a Backdoor Key logger? Really nasty and very hard to get rid of.. You want even know that you have it and it can send your personal and confidential information like bank account and credit card numbers to a remote location?

To be sure, we can check your machine by doing the following:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
? Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
? Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
? When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall.

Extra-Note: Please, DO NOT use ComboFix on your own. It is a very powerful tool designed to deal with sophisticated infections and if something goes wrong or you use it incorrectly, you could possibly lose the use of your computer. It is ONLY meant to be used under the direct supervision of a malware removal specialist.

Regards

2oldGeek

Hi 2oldGeek, thanks a lot for the advice, I'll check this out. I've noticed my desktop is still blue whenever I reboot my computer, though all the messages etc. have disappeared and everything seems to be running normally otherwise. Does this mean I may still have the trojan? Thanks, olebin

hi,

I have fallowed all the instructions and im not exactly sure if the virus is gone, its been about 4 hours since Ive gotten it (idk how, wasnt on a random site or downloading anything). i did the atf cleaner and than the antivirus which said got rid of it but the background was still there, than i did the combofix, which i ran and it said it deleted it, so i restarted my computer and the background was only blue and i was able to change my background again under preferences cause the tabs were back. All the antivirus shortcuts and things under my start menu are gone so does this mean its gone?

If you want to get rid of all viruses, just DBaN your HD, but make sure you back everything up, and then flash your BIOS. That's what I do when i can't get rid of one ;-)

I today received the Joke-bluescreen virus (pretty sure I recv'd from a CNN Alert email).

I followed directions from above from the esteemed 2oldGeek Parts 1 & 2 (ran ATF Cleaner and SUPERAntiSpyware in Safe mode). I still have the blue screen but not the virus text in the middle - I never did experience the rebooting that some say they had).

Below pls find the log from Combofix log and a HiJackthis; pls let me know if there is anything I need to do?

thx,
Lou

@loup18,

One of these days you guys will learn that if you use the instructions for another computer you are taking a chance on trashing yours.. And the oldgeek won?t be able to pull you out of the mess.

But it?s like my signature says. Some only learn by peeing on the electric fence.

See if this will get rid of your BlueScreen saver:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
? Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
? At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
? If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
? Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
? When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
? Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
? When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
? Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Thank you SO MUCH 2oldGeek. I followed your easy instructions and I have my laptop back... whew... I spent hours yesterday trying to figure out a fix. I was about to surrender to reloading Windows (which we all know isn't pleasant).

I am now a member here and it will be the first place I check for a solution.

You're the best!!! My laptop and my frustration level thank you :-)

2OG,

I thought I was doing the right thing but not asking a question that was already answered - are there any guidelines or would you like us to re-ask questions/issues that are already answered (said respectfully).

I will run the procedure above and post afterwards.

Thanks,
Lou

Hi Lou,

Did that get rid of your Blue Screen?

And how are you running, any problems?

If you have followed this thread and applied these fixes without having your computer analyzed and are now stuck with a 24 Hr. Clock then complete the following instructions.

If you still have a blue background on your desktop or a BSOD (screensaver) then download and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware then complete the following:

There are a few things you must do once you are clean:

1. Time for some housekeeping

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer

? Save it to your desktop.
? Run the tool by clicking on the icon.
? Click the Cleanup button.

? The tools that we used as well as this one will be removed from your system.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

? Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
? Click the Empty Selected button.

? If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
? Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

? If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
? Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

? Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

3. Now Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.
Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:

? Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".

? Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

? Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
? Click "OK"
Select the drive you want to clean usually C:
Click OK
When it completes the scan:
? Click the "More Options" Tab.
? Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

4. Defragment your Hard Drive

1.Open My Computer.
2.Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
3.On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
4.Click Defragment.

And here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Download and install Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent Bad ActiveX and spyware from being installed.

In order to prevent the installation of Trojans and Malware on your machine:
Download and install: Comodo BOClean

This little AntiMalware/AntiTrojan program that is very non-invasive. It doesn?t scan for malware that has been installed, it just sits in the tray and captures malware BEFORE it is installed.. It has about 60,000 definitions in the data base and updates 2 or 3 times a week. It will stop Vundo and AntiVirus 20008 the Blue screen pop-ups among others...

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will remove the XP Antivirus and the joke-bluescreen.c virus.
Free download, free to use as well.
Not complicated to use, just run the scanner and then have it remove what it finds.

2OG,
OK... As i said last night, I followed your steps from last night right thru to defrag and I still have the blue screen; the system appears fine, no reboots (which it never did but others have complained about).

What else can I do?

thx,
Lou
