Yes, it's installed correctly and my system bios recognizes it as "SONY DVD RW DW-U14A"

when xp home loads up it begins loading my startup programs and then recognizes a generic "cd-rom" drive and starts to install drivers or whatever it needs to use a new cd/dvd drive, and then promptly restarts the computer on its own.

What could I be doing wrong? If I left it go on its own it would load up/restart for eternity... I let it go through the vicious cycle a couple times before I was sure it was messed up lol. Thanks for any help

Hiya,

IF it will start in SAFE MODE, do that and then use the REMOVE HARDWARE WIZARD to remove ALL instances of the drive from the system.

Perform a shut down-restart, letting it boot normally.

If it gets into Windows then does the same thing again, then it is either:
1 - XP is muffed and needs a complete re-install
2 - the drive is muffed and needs replacing.
3 - another device on the SAME IDE CHAIN is clashing/faulty.

You could spend HOURS mucking around trying little tweaks and tricks, all to no avail.

Good Luck...

Yea, it didn't work in safe mode either... it just restarts. What can ruin a drive? Could the cold or something ruin it? I think the fed ex guy had to leave it outside for me.

A cold drive brought into a warm environment runs the risk of condensation: water, electronics and power don't mix well ;o

Any possibility this happened?

It is always a good idea to let electronics "acclimatise" for a day or so if the temperature and/or humidity differentials are large.

Suspect your drive, try it is another system...

Good Luck....
