Firstly I hope this is the right forum for this type of question. I have Vista Home Premium and tried to update with ck 1. When I do it through the updates automatically it downloads but doe snot install. I have downloaded it from other sites and tried to install and again it does not install. I have downloaded further copies but again same thing.

I keep getting this message:

Error Code: 0x80070246

I researched it and went to the following site - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366

I followed all the suggestions except the last one about disabling my AV and firewall.

I am really getting frustrated as to what to do as nothing seems to work and I really don't want to fiddle around with the registry.

Has anyone had the same problem and if so was there a fix that even I can follow. Thanks all.

Hi MaxPayne1,

I didn't have this trouble when installing mine; failed but then I noticed my internet was disconnected! However, yours appears to be more complicated. So I looked at the link you provided and would say it couldn't hurt to give it one more try with your security disabled to see if that works. And if it doesn't I saw a couple of possibilities. Running a System File Checker tool here

or provided that you have the Vista install disc there was a windy explanation of running this

Sorry neither one of them is really an easy fix. I did happen across the fact that Microsoft provides free support on SP1 until March 2009. So if none of these help there is the option of getting on the horn to somebody in tech support apparently.

"Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no-charge for
support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call,
clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the
update's KB number (e.g., KB931678)."

Hope this may be of some help. Let us know if you get it up and running again.

Thank you Lillith.

Unfortunately I am not in the USA so I am unsure if M$ support is available to myself?. I will give the AV/Firewall suggestion a go sometime and see what happens. Any other suggestions or assistance is appreciated.

Ok, did some more looking and found that yes support is available for those outside North America. Again until March 2009. Those links are here

Vista | select Windows Vista Service Pack 1

and then I found this which lists a whole mess of drivers that apparently are uncompatible so they are blocking the install of SP1, so if you have one of these you may need to update them

and one more thing was the Windows Update Catalog which was not the same as the download center. I'm assuming it walks you through the process of update and scans your computer to see what updates are available for your system. That may be worth a shot too.

So it seems it could be several things preventing the installation. Hopefully one of these will work for you. I would try those and use the phone as a last resort. Of course depending on how much time and patience you have! So good luck and keep us posted.
