I've searched and read the posts on sync issues, but I'm not sure what's happening here, but it doesn't seem exactly related to the other threads. If it's been answered already, my appologies, but I didn't find it.

For quite some time now, I've been ripping my DVD collection to .mpg to store on my Media Vault and/or MediaSmart server to stream to various TVs.

Until recently, I'd rarely encounter a DVD that resulted in an out of sync mpeg. When I did, I'd simply re-encode it and all was well.

However, for the last 6 months or so, I can't get anything to stay in sync at all. They all start out fine, but by the end of the movie they're 2-3 seconds out of sync. Sometimes, the audio will be in sync for a while, then suddenly shift out by a second or two, then after a while be back in sync again. It will do this several times during a title.

I've tried various machines running both XP Pro and Vista. I've tried DVD Decrypter and DVDFab to rip and Nero Express to encode.

The best that I can figure is that the various VOB files are ripped with different audio bitrates and the encoder simply locks onto the first bitrate it sees and does not adjust. Is this correct?

What is a proven and reliable package that others are using?

sounds like the program that you are using is out of sync or not working right if you have had success with most of your conversions before using the same programs! I don't think it would be the ripping of the movies using DVDD or DVDFab! and if you play them using Classic Media Player I am sure these ripped movies will not be out of sync! So it would have to be the conversion program that you are using. Is there an update that you recently did that might be the problem? Or are you multi tasking while it's being converted. I use AVS Video Converter for many jobs that need converting and haven't had problems. I have used Super and had sync problems, too. I have used DVDFab Platinum to convert my DVDs to iPhone and have sync problems so recently I switched to Cucusoft DVD & Video Converter and it's been working like a champ! All my conversions are perfect! So what programs are you using?

Nero Express from the Nero 7 Ultimate Edition. I don't think it's DVDD or FAB either because I can play the VOB files individually and they're fine. I did notice though that on titles that are problematic, there seems to be different audio bitrates among the various VOB files lending to my theory that the encoder locks onto the initial bitrate and any VOB that differs will result in a sync issue. Last night, I downloaded a trial of Xilisoft's DVD Ripper Ultimate and Video Converter Ultimate. Does anybody have anything good or bad to say about either of these? There seemed to be no sync issues, however the trial only encodes 5 minutes of video.
