Partial DVD Burns

Hello,
I have an LG H54N DVD R/W I have burned a ton of disks with no problem but lately I am encountering a series of 5 or 6 bad burns where the diks is only burned 30% to 50% or less and then the software crashes. This happens regardless of recording speed and media. I was unable to complete a burn of an iso file with Nero but it burned successfully with PowerIso. Here is a section of one of my logs where the trouble started:

I would like to be able to rule out the problem as being hardware related. Any help would be much appreciated.

I am currently using Nero 8.
I would like to be able to rule out the problem as being hardware related. Any help would be much appreciated.
I forgot to mention that there has been an audio playback problem with dvd's played over this drive. There is a lot of distortion and crackling although the video is good. Those cleaning disks do not help with this issue. Perhaps this is because there is no audio wire connected to the drive. I am currently using the integrated audio function on the motherboard.

When you haven?t got an audio lead in the back of your drive it plays the sound down the ide ribbon cable that?s why it?s probably distorted are you burning DVD?s? If yes burning at 18x speed is asking for trouble didn?t even know 18x speed disks were available to buy,post a full Nero log so we can get a better understanding of what?s going on

Also it?s no good posting a Nero 7 log if you?re using Nero 8 post the log for the project that it applies too. :)

Thanks for the reply. The 18X got set by mistake that time. I assumed at first that this was the reason for the fail too. The only reason I sent that log is that it was the only one I could find and I assumed similar problems were reported on the other failed burns. The same thing was happening at speeds down to 4X. I have a second external burner that I intend to try using the Nero 8 tonight. If it fails, I will try to remember to save the log this time. If it succeeds I need to recheck the cable connection to the internal drive and make sure they are seated firmly. I have been stuffing and securing PS cables near this bay so I could easily have dislodged the connectors. Being that decoding and burning those large files spoils the better part of 2 hours I will start the burn with the external drive overnight tonight.

I know you?ve said it happens on different brands of media but what brands have you tried? if you?ve been using no frills unbranded etc media in the past and its worked you could have just been lucky like I said when you do get a Nero log can help some more might be worth giving image burn a try see if that solves the problem then we can rule out the drive/disk?s etc also check and see if there is a firmware update for your drive

Thanks for your continued support. I happened to have some time away from the computer today so I was able to do the burns. I burned the disk successfully using Nero 8 and my external DVD RW. Afterwards I removed the stuffed in PS cables from on top of the internal DVD burner (this was restricting ventilation). I then removed and reinserted the cables (they appeared to be fully inserted though) and mounted an 80 mm fan on top of the burner. I already had one blowing air on the hard drive below it which supposedly was exhausting some heat from the burner above it as well. I burned a movie to a DVD using the internal drive this time and the burn did complete successfully - first time in 5 tries. One thing that was different this time is that the only burn speed avaiable to choose from was 4X. Could it be that Nero remembered the previous failed burns and adjusted downward? Another thing different this time is that I could actually smell an odor of burned plastic as the disk was burning. Hopefully in the future higher write speeds will become available again. If you would like to make some closing comments please do so. All the best.

If its working now after you?ve tided up the cables etc in your pc looks like it was an overheating issue don?t understand why you need a fan above your burner if your computer is getting that hot I?d say you need to have a good look at it and find out why its getting so hot have you got your fans blowing the correct way sounds daft I know but its easy done the fans should be blowing in from the front down from the top and drawing out at the back check the direction on them has been known too stick them in the wrong way round there is an arrow on the fan check its direction also cable ties and electrical tape is idea for tiding up all your cables my computer has 4 hardrives 3 optical drives and I?ve only got 1 120mm fan at the back drawing heat out and have no problems :)

And also no you shouldn?t be smelling burned plastic until you sort this out don?t leave the computer unattended incase in brings you house down if it catches fire

Well, I tried to burn a data dvd today and it got nearly finished when it errored out again. This time I had the choice of speeds up to 16X (possibly 18X I'm not sure). Anyway, I chose 16X because that is the speed that I have had 100% success with in the past for hundreds of burns. I don't know if it would have worked at 4X or not. I will try again at 4X tonight and see what happens. One other oddity: I was trying to burn a game. One of the files was a URL with a .htm extension. Nero did not "want" to add this file so I dragged and dropped it to the list manually and it showed up in the file list with no extension showing - just URL. I don't know if trying to copy this one file would have caused the error in the burn. Anuway, the end of the log is similar to the one I sent you originally. I don't know how to add an attachment here. I will simply copy and paste the contents of the full log. I don't know how it will format here:

About the burnt plastic odor: I'm thinking now the smell I was getting was from a recharging electric drill battery that was on the floor a few feet away. In any case I did not notice the odor today. Thank you for your concern. In previous cases smells like this culminated in dead power supplies, but so far so good.

I repeated the burn at 4X with the objectionable file removed and the burn completed and verified successfully. The odd thing was that the speed of the burn did not seem appreciably different (approx 1 hr for 1.5 gb of data) at 4X than it was for the almost completed burn of the same file at 16X.

I know my cpu temp is within normal limits and my mobo and drives are all under 35C most of the time. The ide drive next to the burner did get over 45C probably due to the fact that the dominant air flow is in at the lower front and out at the lower back as you say and did not pass over this drive at all as I was forced to put it in an upper 5.25" bay due to the fact that it would cut off the air supply from the lower front fan of I had 3 drives together in front of the single 80mm fan. The fan above my dvd burner at the moment may or may not be of any benefit. I have no way of knowing as it has no temperature sensor. My gut feeling is that the laser in the DVD is dirty or, more likely, wearing out. Is this the sort of thin that happens when DVD burners wear out?

First thing first dma is off on your drive go into device manager and put on uninstalling the drive and restarting the computer usually resets it that?s if you don?t know how to do it

Also it says here max recording speed is 6x?

Thank you for your analysis. I uninstalled the drive and rebooted. It said cd rom in the systray when detected but showed up normally as DVD ROM in My Computer and in Device Manager. I couldn't figure out how to see if DMA was on or off. I've nearly always burned DVD-R's and that's what this one was. After a failed burn it shows up as a CD drive and is not accessible. I don't know why the speed went up to 6X. I do notice that I'm never seeing 18X as an option now which is a good thing as the disks I buy are not rated above 16X anyway and have invariably failed at 18X on any DVD burn. Have I answered all your questions now? What else should I try now?

If I was you go get a couple of DVD rw saves wasting disk and has I said in my previous post them disk you are using are unreliable go get a pack of verbatim
Also is that log for burning a DVD-r or a cdr? If its dv-r these disk?s aren?t reliable

Thanks. I didn't read the wrap about the recommended burn speed. I already have ten r/w disks but I prefer to use them for stuff I know I am going to erase later such as movies because I seldom watch the same movie twice. The dilemma is that I have experienced a degradation in performance and a drastic increase in errors while nearing the end of a spindle of 75 or 100 disks of the same brand. Also, I prefer to use the printable disks because my printer is enabled to do that. I just purchased a spindle of 50 of the type of disks that you say are limited to 6X, so I can't afford to toss them. The errors began just before the end of the previous spindle. I am limited locally in my purchases but I will certainly have a look for the Verbatim brand to see if there is am improvment. If I can't find them locally I may try via Futureshop or Staples. For now the simplest solution is to use my external burner as I seldom or never have had an error on that one using a variety of the cheapest disks I can buy and always selecting 16X for DVD's and 40X or 48X for CD's.

Thanks for those links. I checked my IDE devices and all are showing DMA if available and Ultra DMA mode 5.
