SCPH-79001 and SMS and MCEmu

Has anyone had success getting SMS (or MyPS2) and the HD_GUI.ELF (memory card emulator) working on a SCPH-79001? I keep trying different versions, but can never get past the black screen.

They both work fine if I pop the memory card into my SCPH-35001, so I figure that either I need to do something special on the newer console, or that they just don't work.

They aren't essential for this console, but would be nice to get it working.

Never mind .... Seems that I need to have a disc in the drive in order for either of these to load.
