I need to be able to rip and read DVD's at higher speeds that 2.10x. Is there a patch or a program out there which is safe and easy to use??. And if so where can i get it from?? I have posted similar threads before but i never got an answer, so i have rephrased it a little. Please see my Spec below. Thanks

there NO patch or speacial way to =RIP* any quicker for those drives. The only drives that rip quickter than 2x are the plextors (3sec button hack), sony (via special soney app), and toshiba (special firmware). I would reccomend you buy a toshiba drive and get the modded firmware.

Hiya gaz,

If you are ripping from the ASUS DVD-ROM (not the Pioneer burner) and you want faster speeds, then install ASPI correctly.

Once you have done that, you should get MINIMUM speeds of approx 4 X and a reasonable maximum of 12 X.

Ripping from the Pioneer burner is locked at 2.1 X
Don't even think about flashing the Pioneer.....

Hi DrChips, Just read your last post on NOT flashing a Pioneer 106D burner. Just want your opinion on this. I have a Memorex dual format drive that is actually the 106D and is locked at the 2x rip speed. I have 2 firmware downloads that I haven't had time to use yet. One converts the Memorex to a TRUE pioneer 106d drive and the second unlocks the all the extras and rip speed. From all the info I read, if done right its a big improvement. I state again IF DONE RIGHT. What do you think about this?

its worth it if you know how to correctly flash a CDROM, i flash my toshiba with no problem, ive been able to rip as high ast 13x with my re-flashed toshiba and 9x with my plextor by holding down the eject button for 3 secs on my plex.

Hi xeonox, I'm not worried about how to flash the drive. I have a FCC 1st class repair license and have been repairing electronics for over 20 years. I just wanted another opinion on the flash. Drchips may know something about the drive I don't. Just thought I'd ask. Thanks for your input. Comments are always welcome.

Only 20 years, Jerry? Are you sure you want to try a flash? ;)

Hiya Jerry,

A significant proportion of the OEM drives are actually Pioneer under the skin - quality counts ;)

I don't know which firmwares you have or the EXACT model number, so am unable to comment.

Good tips are:

1 - make sure the drive is on one of the standard IDE controllers on the M/B
2 - make sure the drive is a MASTER
3 - make sure the drive is the only device on that IDE chain
4 - boot from floppy into DOS and flash using the DOS executable (flashing from within Windows can be dodgy, as ANY issues with Windows can cause a faulty flash)
5 - watch out for ANY MESSAGE that might indicate a less than successful flash, re-flash if needed BEFORE re-booting
6 - test each step (flash) before proceeding with the next

Have Fun...

P.S. watch out for the hacked firmwares, some of them REDUCE your writing speed (read up first)

Hey Drchips, Thanks for the reply. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a hidden problem out there I didn't know about. I may not flash until my warranty is up since I can't change it back to a Memorex once I go to Pioneer. Its no big deal either way. Thanks again for your input.

Nephilim, I liked your comment, its actually been longer than 20 years but when I start counting how many, I realize I'm getting OLDer. So I just round it off. LOL
Thanks again guys.
