Is is possible to reinstall the symbian firmware on a nokia n81? I guess I would have to find it first, but before I even go hunting is it possible?

It is possible, but you will need kit that isn't available to the public. Repair centres have jigs which allow reflashing of the phone software. We pay to have ours done because the kit costs too much.
