My sons compaq laptop has been working realy bad. When you click on lets say start to open programs or anything you click on it would take a half a hour to do anything if at all.I dis registry fixes, anivirus, and other things to fix it in safe mode.It worked somwhat good in safe mode.So I took my windows xp disk to my alienware and tried to install that, but that didnt work.It says- Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. \WINDOWS\SYSTEm32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.SAV--You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM..We cant find it.What can I do?

By 'original setup CD-rom' it means the cd that came with your machine. Now as far as your sons laptop here are a few things you could do:
1) Do a destructive system restore or reinstall windows xp using an install cd. What this deos is it completely erases everything and re-installs the factory files it came with. So pretty much its like you just bought the laptop. The only drawback is that it erases all personal files. To do the destructive system restore, constantly press F8 when the laptop is booting. It should then take you to a menu with several options. Look for something like 'system restore' and then go from there.

2) Try to speed up your sons' OS. You can do several things to do this.
* One is to hit the start button and then on 'run'. in the new window type: msconfig
and then hit ok. A new window should pop up with several tabs at the top. The first tab should be the "General Tab". Under this tab, you check 'selective startup'. Two tabs over and it should be "startup" tab. This tab shows all the programs that start up whenever windows boots. (The more programs startup the slower windows will be.) So what i do is uncheck all items except for virus protection programs.
* Another way is to defrag the harddrive. You do this by hitting start then hit my computer. On the new window right click the main drive and hit properties. A new window pops up with several tabs. Look for the one that says tools and click on hit. Once in the tab, hit defragment now.
* A third way to boost windows speed is to install more RAM.

3)If all fails then its time for a new laptop ^^
