Need some help/guide on how to secure my wireless network.
I have following:
-Desktop running windows XP
-Cable modem
-Netgear wireless router
Just got myself laptop & when I try to connect to internet via wireless router (laptop does detect wireless router/netgear) however it says something like "this is not a secured connection"
What do I need to do to make this wireless network secured.
Do I need to modify/change setting in router or laptop or both.
How can I make both desktop & laptop secured?
Thank you for your help/guide.
first of all, you have to access the router and to do that...you normaly type 192.168.1.1 into your web broswer and you will normally be presented with a prompt asking you for a username and password....
By default, it should be UN admin PW admin...after that you should gain access and be able to enter and encryption key...make sure and choose WPA2 TKIP/AES..
the encryption key is whatever to decide to make it....it can be anything....also don't forget to change the SSID, that is the networks name..just to personalize a bit...
Hello & thank you again for your reply,
I did all you told me & it seems to work, when I go to my laptop it now says connected to "secured" wireless network.
But I'm not 100% sure about what you said,
"make sure and choose WPA2 TKIP/AES" where is this? In my laptop wireless networj properties?
When I go here I see 2 tabs, connection & security so I choose security, then "security type" with a drop-down window & also encryption type with drop-down window which has TKIP or AES.
After securing router I opened laptop & by default in security type window it puts 'WPA-ERPSONAL" & in encryption it put "TKIP"
Is this o.k or do I need to change something here?
I seem to have some small issues. somehow I've lost connection.
A) On my router "advacned wireless settings" I see a box marked
wireless card access list "setup access list" here I need to enter
MAC address of all wireless computers/hardware, if I don't I will not be able to connect with the router.
B) I also have PS3 which use to connect wireless, now that I have secured it will not. I tried entering MAC ID of PS3 in the router setting but still no go.
C) Is Laptop suppose to have own MAC ID so I can enter it in the router. Not sure that happened, it worked before.
D) I also have "TIVO" DVR which has USB network adaptor & worked well but now that I am using network security it seems everything has lost connection.
Yes, because you have secured your wireless network..everything that was using that "unsecured network connection" before just connected right to it...just like any laptop/USB/wireless anything...
Now that you have encryption those devices now have to authenticate themselves on your wireless network...how they do that, i have no idea...you may have to check with their websites or remove encryption from your network.
