Here's a poser. I have a sony dru 810 and Liteon dvd rom in my main computer. I put a data dvd in both drives and neither will read it. I have another computer (#2) with a sony 510 dvd rw which reads it just fine. I put the 810dru in the #2 computer and it reads fine. What do you think...mb ide problem with #1 computer? Bear in mind, the dvd's in the #1 computer will read, rip and burn dvd's with no problem, as well as burn and read other other data dvds.

So is it that just a single specific DVD won't read? Is it a specific type of media? You said "Bear in mind, the dvd's in the #1 computer will read, rip and burn dvd's with no problem, as well as burn and read other other data dvds." So it sounds like it's specific to a single piece of media. Have you tried making a copy of the disc?

I burned copies from the #2 computer and the copies can only be read from that computer. Both drives, when switched from the #1 to the #2 computer read fine.

It does sound like an IDE problem (assuming the dvd is using the IDE interface). Most computers have 2 IDE connections. Have you tried to switch the interface? Another possiblity is the power supply, have you tried having only one drive connected? The third possibility is the cables. I assume you're using the same cable when connecting it to computer #2 however, so that would rule out that possibility.
Also, what motherboard do you have? It might be worth doing a search for issues with the motherboard. Hope this helps.

I am kind of having the same problem. I just bought the same Sony DVD drive. My old drive will not record but plays DVD and CD's fine that is why I got a new one. With the new DVD player it will not recognize a DVD movie( says format not recognized) will not play CD's either. Driver update is fine and in hardware device says this device is working properly.
I have a DEll 800mhz, 300+ RAM, and running XP Home. I am at a loss.
Tried using jumper as MASTER and Cable select. My old one was set for cable select.

Well, I put another LG DVD drive in my Dell that I had on my newer system and it played fine. That LG drive is about a year old. I think I will go back and buy the LG litescribe DVD drive and put it in my new system (ASUS A8N-E, 512M RAM, AMD 3500+ processor) it should work in my new system. I still don't know why the new LG would not work in my DELL. I did however get the CD's to work by disable the Digital CD in device hardware but DVD still would not work.
