I recently did an erase and install on my sisters ibook g4. It was running panther but then I upgraded it to Tiger. What happened is that once the comptuer started up again (just after upgrading to tiger) the screen foze. When i turn on the comptuer, it gets to the apple screen (just apple showing with white background) and freezes, anyone know how to fix it?

Yes in fact i can tell you exactly what happened i hope you saved your panther disks you are going to need them you need to reinstall panther and update the g4 ibooks firmware before installing tiger you can download the update via apple.com

Now for another issue it could also be your logic board took a dump logic board failure is common for g4 and even some g3 ibooks i would recommend trying to update the firmware first and try tiger again.

I still have the Cd's. The thing is , the computer had tiger already on it. It was working fine until it messed up. Thats why i decided to reinstall the system. I was going to reinstall panther then upgrade to tiger. So tiger works on it. So should still reinstall panther. And how do i do it since it stops at the apple screen( apple sign with wit the background)

This may help:

1. Start up in single-user mode. You can do this by rebooting; after the tone, press and hold the Command (Apple) + S keys. You will be taken to the single-user mode command line interface.

2. type: /sbin/fsck -fy

3. Hit the return key

4. If there are errors, repeat steps 2 and 3 until there are no errors.

5. When there are no errors, type: reboot

6. Hit the return key

Yes i would try the firmware update. if that doesn't solve it could be a bad hard drive, but also logic board failures are becoming very common on the G4 laptops now.
