HTPC Software Suggestions?

I have been using a semi powerful pc to play movies/cd's I ripped to my NAS box for a while now, but now I want to make it the main media center for my family. After having our 2nd Brand Name DVD player go out in the last 2 years, I have decided to digitize the whole collection. My wife has basic computer skills (she still asks for help loading attachments in Gmail). I need software that will make it easy for her to load up whatever she needs for her or our toddler's satisfaction. Also want software that doesn't have a hard time playing over a network via a wireless 54g connection (VLC & Foobar skip often). I have been ripping my discs in raw format since I don't have patience for video compression software. Should I create iso's or just leave them in the vob format?

Here is the gear I have:
HTPC - 2800+ Athlon XP processor, 2 gigs ram, Geforce 6600gt video card.
NAS - Netgear Readynas NV+
TV - Pioneer Plasma 5080
Receiver - HK AVR 745

I connect the pc directly to the receiver via USB so the receiver acts as the sound card. I have an RF Remote Wonder connected via usb, but I wanted to make use of the programmable IR remote that came with my receiver (TC30). To that end, I was thinking of purchasing the IRA 3 or the Tira 2.1. Anyone know if one gives better results than the other?
