I have been having issues burning DVD's as of late. Running Vista SP1, DVD shrink 3.2.0.15, Nero 6, on a Sony Vaio VGN-CR420E, MATSHITA UJ870QJ drive. Yea, I know old software and crappy equipment but the software has always worked for me and the comp was dirt cheap. Comp is less than 1 month old. Initialy using some of a friends Memorex DVD's with no problems, brought it home and started to use Memorex DVD's which I bought on sale (not the same model of DVD's) and starting having buring problems. At the end of the burn I am receiving an error message "burn not complete" and the dvd is ejected. From the error file I find, "Session fixation error" and "Could not perform end of Disk-at-once." The DVD has strange rings on it. The first half inch from the center will be ususal uniform color burn, then it ubruply changes to a darker color, in the next half inch it fades back to the correct lighter color. Then it repetes the same change and fade until the end of the burn. The DVD will sometimes run in the burning comp, but will not run in another comp or a stand alone DVD player. The optical drive on the playing comp acts as if it is at the end of travel for the laser. The successful DVD's that I burned earlier do not have the rings, uniform color across the entire surface.
First I thought it was bad media because Memorex is crap, I tried Sony's DVD's (because I have had really good luck with them, 200+ burns on an old HP desktop). I started to read other feeds on afterdawn, sent computer back to Sony for replacement optical drive, (because I cannot burn any DVD). They said I had a corrupt OS, and imaged the drive, seems like they could not find anything wrong. Not sure why all of the sudden this is becoming an issue. Waiting on disks to image the hard drive myself.
Is it possible Sony/Microsoft is using a tool to keep from backing up DVD's?
Girl friend has same comp...going to try this process/software on it this weekend.
Update:
Removing all of Roxio and using the utility did nothing. I did not expect it to because I had had several burns with both with no problem. Briefly I was not able to read or write to the drive, which almost confirmed to me that it was a drive. I was about to send it back to Sony and upon restart it started to work. Which in my mind points to a software problem. I can burn working disks with imgburn, but it is slower. For some reason it claims that it cannot close the disk because I am burning on a slimbay drive and it results in an error because it cannot lock the image file from reading while burning. I still have the funny rings on the burned surface, but they work in a playing comp and a stand alone player.
Once I finally get the correct image disks from Sony I am going to image the HD and try the old software.
