ok, so i have a compaq presario, with a standard VGA port in the back, ever since i got it i had been using a fat grey monitor without any problems, yesterday i got a 19" flat screen LCD gateway monitor from a friend. i hooked it up, didn't work the fist 3 or 4 times i tried booting up, then the 5 or so, it worked. same thing happens every time i power off, and when i try to power back on. is it my computer? or the monitor?

If your PC has been working fine with your old monitor, it's probably the new monitor at fault.

something might have come loose during the transport to your place. when you mean it doesn't work, do you mean it doesn't power up til about the 5th time or what?

the 5th time is when pressing the monitor power button or restarting the pc?

powering on/off is holding the power button on my PC until the system shuts off, then pressing it again...then repeat until it works.

the missing pins don't mean anything as not all pins are used so some manufacturers won't put the not used pins in to save money.

well i tried out the monitor on my brothers computer and it worked...the first time.
what i noticed is my computer monitors plug in is a part of the motherboard, his (a dell) has a monitor plugin thats attached in a slot, like my linksys wireless card is, so im gonna assume thats a graphics/video card, and mine is a generic one on an old Asus motherboard...
so now, who can help me find a cheap decent graphics card. i dont know which ones will fit, and which wont.
my PC specs;
Compaq presario s5400nx
1 GB RAM
2.6 GHz
sorry cant tell you how many pins they are or anything like that cuz i dont know...
http://twojepc.pl/html/pci_express_kontakt/agp-vs-pci_1.jpg
the one on the top definantly looks like it will fit, i just dont know what it is..
any help is appreiciated

That's AGP, so you're looking for an AGP graphics card. Bear in mind you will need a power supply sufficient enough to power a graphics card, so don't get anything too complex.

ok, so thx for the links that helped a lot, i saw that i can support up to AGP x8, but im not into gaming or video editing, nothing like that. Also i have a 250 watt max power supply, wich i dont think is enough for an AGP x8 so were can i find like a standard AGP x4 decent card for like 40 bucks more or less?..
also if a new card doesnt work, are there any other solutions?
also forgot to mention, the monitor supports VGA and DVI wich is better? should i get a graphics card with DVI?

unless you get a highend agp card then any 8x agp will work without extra power. i think dvi is better then vga. see what the price difference is between 2 almost identical cards in that 1 has vga & the other has both vga & dvi. do you have both vga & dvi cables?
