no, u dont need a psx emu to play ps1 games. Once u get to 3.03 firmware (somewhere there) there is a built in PSX emu. However,

If u have a official firmware from Sony. Then u have to buy ur game.

If u have a modified firmware. Then u can download or convert ps1 iso.

also to increase your chances of playing the psx games on your cfw you should get popsloader
