Why do some widescreen DVDs still have the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen when my TV is widescreen?

Not all of my DVDs do it, but most do. I don't get it.

There are different aspect ratios the movies were shot in. Some fill the screen completely and some don't. Some aspects are 2.35:1 and 1.85:1, and 2.40:1. Your TV is working properly. The aspect ratio is on the back of the widescreen version boxes. I don't know which ratio fills the screen. Someone else enlighten us!

Unless you're content to watch stretched images, then you're like the rest of us, black bars on most widecreen movies. Your normal 4:3 TV images can also be stretched but they look bad also. So get used to the black bars, both Horiz and Vert.

A while ago i read an article on the black bar issue, apparently it actually is a better quality & more detailed picture than in normal tv mode,do a search if you want a more informed explanation..lol..

1:85:1 will fill the screen with no black bars 2.35:1 will get you the black bars so check the back of the dvd box to find out what is the aspect ratio most new films are shot in 1:85:1
