Virtually all of my DVD back-up's during mainly 2005 to RIDATA blanks are ready for the trash can.

I thought these disks were essentially RITEK?

They won't load into several players and PC drives and amongst many different brands (many less known and cheaper) they stand alone as now being useless. They were fine in the months following burning!

Footnote: All of my Betamax & VHS from more than 20 years ago are fine!!!

Ritek went though a phase of bad media for awhile. I don't buy it anymore. Have seen some Riteks go unreadable in as little as 6 months after burning it. The 16x media seems to be ok though in my experience.

I too typically stay away from RITEK.

I use TY's and Verbs pretty much strictly.

If you wait for the good sales you can get Verbatims in various stores for cheaper than the crappy stuff!

I prefer TY first & Verb second. However I have used other media with good results. The 16x Ritek seems to be holding up ok. I think it was the 8x Ritek that had problems. Some older 4x Ritek I burned is still readable & I've got a few (like 3 or so) 2x Riteks that were burned at 4x & they still read back well to this day.

Sony seems to be good too.

I haven't had any trouble with Cmags although I don't normally buy them. However last month I was in my local Microcenter & picked up some HP & Phillips 16x 50 packs. Both packs were CMC. They burned & tested fine.

Yesterday I was at Microcenter to try out some of the Windata that they have on sale for $9.99 each. Both the + & - code out as MCC however I'm 99% sure that it's eather a fake media code or perhaps Verb rejects. Either way they seem to burn & test ok. About the same results I get with Cmag but not as good as real Verbs or TY media.

As far as sales go I don't really follow them in the local stores much as I buy 99% of my media online. Have about 130 TY's left from my last online order & UPS delivered a few boxes more. A 600 pack of inkjet printable TY plus I got a 100 pack of inkjet printable Prodisc that I wanted to test just to see whether it was any good or not. Haven't opened any of it yet but I will in a day or two since I've got four Cmag packs to burn as well as both Windata packs. So I guess I'm set between the computer & my DVD recorder hooked up to the cable dvr for awhile. 1130 discs will take several months to burn!!

Oh & Magnavox is Cmag too....

Typically, and there are a few variances, i use Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim for my backups.

And Sony, or RichoJpn's for my son's. I lucked out during the Office Depot sale and got a 50 pack of RichoJpn's for a whopping nine bucks.

I've had trouble with Riteks...but not the 16x as i've never ventured to try them. And yes, to confirm what you said bratcher, the ones i had trouble with were of the 8x variety. They didn't hold up very well, had a few coasters, etc.

If the 16x seem ok, and they're on sale...i might give them a try sometime.

Oh man, I hope you're wrong, but I have heard about Riteks being unreadable just a year after burning. I only bought a few spindles back in 2005 under the Ridata brand - 4X and 8X.

You might want to try and copy the unreadable DVDs using another DVD drive. I had a concert boot DVD that was unreadable in 3 different drives, so I bought a brand new Pioneer drive just so I could try and save it. It still wouldn't read it. So I pulled out a really old Plextor drive (712A), and miraculously, it read the DVD. :)

The 4x Ritek should be ok. It's the 8x stuff that goes bad. Strangely my Plextor 716-A could read those old 8x discs (before the drive tray broke) & my 6 moonth old Samsung is able to read them without a problem however the DVDInfopro scans are horrible. I've already copied the 8x Ritek discs to the hard drive then burned TY discs of the data. I'll still keep the old discs though just to see if they will read back sometime in the furute.

Quite agree on the different drives giving different results.

With these "Ridata's" giving trouble, an old Sony DRX-500ULX external, seems to handle some of the faulty ones better. Also the drive in an Acer Laptop reads some other discs that the Sony won't handle.
Not only the drives, but the programs give differing results.
Nero Re-Code will look at some, whereas the old DVD X-Copy Rescue likes some of the other problem discs.

A fairly new Pioneer Dual Layer drive doesn't handle most of the faults, so really looking for tips if anyone has found a drive which is very versatile.

I'm still puzzled as to why it is only these Ridata's (4X 2003 / 2004) that are dying.
I have many other unknown and suspect discs, including 4X Princo's, which are fine?

Yep; The known good brands with good reputations are now so economical to buy, one wouldn't waste their time and effort with the others.
Back in 2003 (in Australia), the good stuff was scarce and extremely expensive so there was a good excuse to try some of the others.Bad move!
