Hey :)
I appreciate the time you're taking to read my SOS!

I've tried installing the drivers, from various places...the cd that came w/the enclosure, from the manufacture's site...through my hardware install wizard, and I can't get the driver to install. I've chosen the setup.exe file from everywhere, plus other things and the farthest I get is to Instalshield, and it says: no SCSI adapter, installation is terminating.

Help! What's this about? Can someone help me solve this...challenge? (lol)

Thanks a lot!

The JMB36x appears to be a raid controller not an external enclosure. Are you using a USB hard disk enclosure? Because those install without drivers.

Thanks for the reply! I am using a USB enclosure. What's the difference between a raid controller & an external enclosure? What I did was take my old HD, put it in the enclosure, plugged both USB cords in...are 2 necessary? One seems to only be an AC type adapter, and the other is a traditional port. I assumed the AC type is what it was getting power from, but I'm still kind of confused because I thought the USB feed would've been enough for all of that.

What kind of procedure should I go through if no drivers are necessary? The disc that came with it seem to have mostly 98 drivers, but there are a couple of folders for other OS's.

Thanks again!
Jax

USB can't power full size 3.5" desktop hard drives, USB can only produce 5W and desktop drives typically consume 10-15W, hence the AC plug. If it's a USB box with only one drive it'd solely be an external hard drive enclosure, not a RAID controller. What happens when you just plug the box in, nothing else, and what OS are you using?

Hi! Thanks for the reply :)

I plug it in and my computer reads it but tells me it can't start the device. Do you think it can only run off of a firewire? I'm using Win XP Pro. What's the difference between a raid controller and an external exclosure?

I appreciate your help!

2.5" or 3.5" drive? 2.5" drive will get it's power from pc via 2nd usb cable. 3.5" drive will get it's power from power bar as usb can only provide 5 volts but 3.5" drive needs 12 volts for spin motor.

It looks like it's a 3.5" drive...I used both the wires, so I don't think it's an power issue. Is there any specific start-up sequence that I ought to use?

Thanks!

it is a power issue as 3.5" drives need 12 volts to spin the platters whereas the 2.5" only need 5 volts.

You can only power 3.5" drives externally by either running a power cable from your PC outside the case and round to the drive, or by using an external hard disk box, which comes with the power adapter required. It is not possible to power 3.5" HDDs solely using the data bus they are connected with.

Hmmm, I think I've tried that. It can with 2 wires, so I'm thinking the second was for that additional needed power. I used both, but still no dice.

?

:)

What do you think?

you need 12 volts & as usb can only supply 5 volts then get a new 3.5" drive enclosure that has either built in power supply with 12 volts or uses external power adapter like a lot of laptops do.
