what else do i need !!_DS_MENU.DAT, moonshell-for-r4-v1.71 _system_ and English-1.17.rar

i am a newbie and i know nothing about the ds. when i got my r4, it didn't have the cd rom with it so i don't have the files. i tried going on r4ds.com and read the user guide but i didn't understand what else i need. i now am stupid but i can't help it, i am very desperate to play but don't know what to do. i already have the _DS_MENU.DAT, moonshell-for-r4-v1.71 _system_ and English-1.17.rar what else do i need to get thins working?
i really want to start playing!!

Didn't take that trip to Golden Computer Center as I suggested, eh?
BTW, the latest version of R4 firmware is 1.18.
The R4 software typically comes as .rar file. UnRAR the file and you should have 2 directories and 2 files
_system_
moonshl
_DS_MENU.DAT
_DS_MSHL.NDS
Copy all of these to the ROOT directory of the microSD card.
Now, before you copy any ROMs to the SD card, put the microSD back into the R4 and see if it boots into the moonshell folder. If it does, great, now you can copy uncompressed ROMs (.nds files) into the ROOT directory of your microSD and you should be ready to go.

it's not like i don't want to go but my parents won't let me go alone since i just came back from canada and my cantonese isn't really good. although i can go with my friends but they aren't here. i have to wait until they come back from summer holiday :( My parents are always busy at work so i hardly get to see and ask them to take me there.

Hey, I wasn't getting on your case.
Hong Kong can be an intimidating place if you're not a native, and I'm not sure that I would let my child go there unaccompanied. Naturally, I couldn't tell how old you are from you post.
BTW, nearly veryone at Golden speaks English.
All that notwithstanding, the instructions I provided should get you up and running.
If you still have problems post here and I or someone else will probably be able to help you through this.

"Still doesn't work" provides no descriptive symptoms with which to troubleshoot.
What does it do?
Smoke your DS?
Black screen?
White screen?
Nintendo screen?
C'mon people, this is not "Telepsychic" (for those of you old enough to remember the early days of SNL)

Hi guys.
I'm also having the same problem with my boy's DS... Ended up here!
I have the white R4 card (from the golden shopping centre!) I have put all the mentioned files on it as shown in various posts on this forum, down loaded the latest update, opened the rar.
The card is a new micro SD 2G Apacer.
I have tried the .nds files with and without a folder.
All I get is a red card shape on the top screen with a cheeky grin on it's smug little face. Nothing else.
Any ideas... Really busy at work for the next few weeks, so no time to get in to SSP.

If my instructions above did not resolve your issue, and if you are still in HK I would take it back to GSS and have the vendor set it up. Take your NDSL and make sure it works. At least you can be sure it's not a bad R4 or some other hardware problem.
They won't copy .nds files for you but that part is simple.

The wife managed to get into Mong kok and have a shop dood sort it out... It looks at thought he just added some TT menu files?!?
Anyhow, it's all systems go now, my son can go on the MTR without screaming abuse at all the other passengers...
Cheers anyhow, I'm sure I'll be back here when the next bit of tech crap stops working!

I highly recommend that you make a copy of the microSD and put it on a PC or somewhere safe.
That way you have a known working image should something happen or you purchase addition microSD.
