Does the BIOS recognize the drive? Does the front light blink on and off when you start the computer? More information will be help to successfully troubleshoot your problem.

I think that is your best option, right now burners are really cheap and instead of troubling yourself with a damaged burner, buy a brand new that you are sure it will work. Although make sure your burner is really not working, because right know it may be working but you may have missed a configuration or have a software conflict, so before you go and buy a new one make sure that your computer is not the problem.

try reseating the cables to the drive & to the motherboard. also try a different data cable to drive. if those don't work then replace the drive.

Agreed! I mucked around trying to get my old DVD writer to work for several months. Got it to work once, came back several weeks later and nothing. Went out and bought a new one last weekend and have been happy ever since.
