Daytek 950-S loader/burner replacement request

I recently purchased a couple of Daytek 950-S HDD recorders off Ebay (the prices were too good to resist) but when I received them, I found out that the loader/burners were defective. Normally, this would not be much of a problem as I have 1 functioning unit that I can swap the HDDs with as well, the HDDs can be pulled and read from any of my computers but for convenience sake I might like to put some of the programs I record onto DVD +Rs without having to take the machine apart. The loader is listed as a BDR-L08 (Packard Bell) but there is no info on that drive that I can find. I'm trying to find out if there is a functional equivalent to that drive (the only replacements I've found are refurb units out of the UK) available in North America or if anyone has replaced the drive with something else that works. It was speculated at one point that the drives are rebranded NEC drives but there was no follow up post proving that either way. Can anyone help?
