I'm not sure but I think I am running into my first instance of copy protection. I'm trying to back up some of my movies that I recently purchased (one is a very recent release, the other is about 4 months old). My software runs for about 5 seconds, and then just locks up, forcing a ctrl+alt+del shut down. When it crashes I get a pop up from Microsoft .NET Framework that says an unhandled exception has occurred...The Process cannot access the file "...cladDVD .NET 3.5.6\p" because it is being used by another process.

I haven't had this issue with any of my older movies (all 5+ years old).

All of the films that this issue does arise with have 1 thing in common...Hopefully I can explain this clearly because I do not really know what much of it means. I scroll through the different sections of the DVD (VTS_01, VTS_02, VTS_03..etc.) until I find the one that has the largest number of chapters/time. On the films that I can not rip properly, I usually see multiple sections that have the same number of chapters (20-30 depending on film), butthey all differ by a few minutes in length.

Any ideas? If a fix can not be recommended, then does anyone know of any other free, reliable software to rip dvd's into avi format?

Use dvdfab Hd Decrypter to rip.
Dvd shrink to compress.
Imgburn to burn.
