Hi all,

I recently purchased the LG GGW-H20L Blu ray writer and am just finished installing it.

Although I ran into some trouble before it started working and was hoping someone could verify if I have done things right. Please bear with me if I sound like a noob at some points.

Anyway, its a SATA drive, which is fine since my motherboard has 6 SATA ports (5 free), so connecting the SATA data cable was not a problem.

However, the SATA power cable connection was a nightmare. Firstly, the cable that came with it looked similar to this:

http://www.gshop.com.au/images/idepower_to_satapower.jpg

but whenever I tried to plug the clear end into any of the equivalent ports coming from the power supply, the drive was not recognised at all by Windows.

The amount of cables coming from the power supply was like a jungle and some of the equivalent ports I connected it to were already connected to fans and such, but there was a few straight SATA power connecters coming from the power supply so I just hooked in one of these and it worked.

SO; is it okay that I did not use the power cable that came with it and just plugged the SATA power connecter from my power supply?

AND ALSO

The aforesaid connecter has SATA 1 on it, but my data cable for the blu ray drive is connected to SATA port 6, does this matter or is it okay?

Sorry for the rant, just worried I installed it wrong as I'm not used to this.

Hope someone can help/confirm.

Cheers

I was in the same situation... with the power connection. I just plugged where I could actually reach. Everything is still working fine. As for the SATA port, I was able to connect mine in port 2... but yours should be fine.

BTW, congrats on the purchase, did yours come with a black BD-RE? It is good being able to do your own rip, encodes/recodes. Here's a few links that cover ripping, recoding, etc. They're quite long but very informative.

Cheers, thats a weight off my mind.

Yeah it came with an LG BD-RE, although I haven't used it yet. I ordered 10 printable BD-R's off ebay for £50, so once they arrive next week gonna burn a few movies.

Cheers for the links; I'll need to browse to find how to convert my .mkv files to the standard retail BluRay movie format, as I have Sin City and the Star Wars collection in glorious 1080p waiting to be burned.

Save your $pounds$ and buy some DVD DL's, if done properly you can recode Blu-Ray rips to fit on a DVD9 and I guarantee you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I have the Star Wars D/L's, recoded and converted to m2ts to play on my PS3, they look great!!!

Follow the first link I sent you, you'll learn alot.

Have fun!!
