Help Jailbreaking iPhone 3G 2.0

I've just recently bought an iPhone 3G 2.0 16gig, Telstra locked (Australia). I'm worried out of my pants doing it so i want to do AS MUCH research as possible into "Jailbreak" only, before attempting this. Unlocking part of things i dont want to do. Anyway i have started by downloading 2 things (1)-the "iPhone 3G Jailbreak" folder which has 2 files: iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore& x12220000_4_Recovery (2) Pwnage Tool_2.0. I'm running the latest version of iTunes. Ok a few questions: Whats the difference between the Pwnage Tool_2.0[b]and [b]iPhone 3g Jailbreak custom restore files? Which do i use to jailbreak my iPhone? Going through the step by step method im not understanding the part Step8- Step 8: When restoring has completed, it will ask you to connect to iTunes, then re-do the activation process (download carrier settings).
What is re-do Activation process and how do i download carrier settings for Telstra?
Sorry to seem dumb its just that i want to fully understand what to do and what im doing before i attempt any of this. If i can clear up step 8 i pretty much would be confident to go ahead with things.
Any help would be aprreciated. Any helpful links and advice would be great.
