excuse me if this sounds stupid when i had windows xp i could rip dvds not burn them the vista wont allow me to do same any help would be most grateful.

Neither version of Windows allows you to rip DVDs, at least not commercially-produced copy-protected ones. You need something like DVD Decrypter or DVDShrink.

Better solution...DVD neXt copy, and VSO copy2DVD....can't go wrong

Dvd decrypter has not been updated in years and can't handle new encryption.

Dvd shrink has a rudamentary ripper and, since it also hasn't been updated in years, can't handle newer encryption.

Dvdfab hd decrypter is continuously being updated and can handle newer encryption.

I use dvdfab hd decrypter to rip.
Fixvts to 'clean up' the results.
Dvd shrink to compress to dvd5 size.
Burn the results with imgburn.

(All these programs are free)

You could always change the compability mode back to XP and this is the wrong forum for this question.

Yeah you use dvd neXt copy to rip any standard DVD into an .ISO file and then you use VSO copy2dvd to convert and burn it back onto DVD

The method rtm27 laid out for you is tried and true. It is the method I use as well. How can you go wrong its all free? I would definately try it before going out and buying other programs. Just my opinion.
