Hi all.

Been on this site for a while now, but never actually posted anything.

For some time now i have been using AVG Antivirus and Zone Alarms on my computer as my security but im wondering if there is another setup that might be worth using??? It would be for Windows XP.

Also, my mate is asking the same question but for Windows Vista.

Any help/information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi J381

The security setup which I will now recommend is strictly my opinion, even though I may have the statistics and reviews to prove my choice. As for your mate with Vista, most programs nowadays can also run on Vista, so there shouldn't be much of a difference between the security setup on an XP machine and on a computer running Vista.

The free setup
Antivir Free - Superantispyware Free - Filseclab Firewall - Comodo Pro - Spybot S&D - Spyware Blaster - Advanced Windowscare Personal - A-squared Free.

I use Antivir because it is the best antivirus in terms of detection, heuristics, and resource-consumption. Same goes for Superantispyware as an antispyware product, even though its heuristics are definitely not on par with A-squared, which has a paranoid detection and should only be used for analysis/on-demand scanning, even though it might also detect some innocent files for their malware-like behavior.

Filseclab Firewall is a great free firewall which runs at extremely low resource-consumption rates, and together with Windows Firewall should be adequate for normal surfing. In case of extra security being needed, Comodo acts as an "on-demand" firewall which is disabled normally but can be enabled any time you want.

The rest of the programs just act as extra protection in various forms.

Please also note that this is the free setup, and any of the programs can be updated to the paid versions.

There are also more forms of protections which you can use, such as a custom hosts file and HIPS.

Best Regards :D
