Hi everyone im using bitorent and have been for a while now. I'v downloded many things but i have sort of a problem. I'v never been able to "forward a port" before either because i just gave up or it didnt work. So my real question is does it really do anything? whenever i download i only reach max downloading speeds of 50kb/s. Iv read of people who have speeds of 3mb/s and was blown away by this. if the port forwarding is the problem then i would like to know how to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

In a word, yes, but you won't see 3 MB unless your connection supports it. On my 3 Mb plan, I see a maximum download speed of 350 KB. Have you been to PortForward and followed a guide there for your router and, maybe, modem. You have to allow your client through any firewall and, maybe, set a static ip address too. You can take a speedtest to get your actual speed, this is an accurate site: http://www.speedtest.net/ and divide your download speed by 8 to get KB and that will be your max. You can try it at various days and times to get a good average, specially if you're on Cable.

well ive used speedtest.net for a while to just to check up on the speed and already have a good average speed. As for going to PortForward iv done that to but i think i messed up my connection to the internet when i tried. Also does a static ip make you vulnarable in terms of hackers and stuff like that. Im running COMODO firewall and my windows firewall is up to so i dont think that would be much of a problem. My ISP is Roadrunner i dont know how good there internet is. I have a modem supplied from Time Warner and i also have a Linksys hooked up too. If you need more specs let me know.

Messing up your connection is usually a sign of trying to set a static ip when the DNS Server and Default Gateway at Command Prompt show the same and are used. If that's the case, you'll have to find them on the status page of your router or your ISP (I wouldn't hold my breath on that one), those at Open DNS work well too, here's an old thread on them: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=150520. A static address only prevents your router from selecting a new address each time you reboot and negating any forwarding. You need to allow your client through your Firewalls (don't know much on Firewalls, not sure if Windows is necessary or can conflict). Some modems contain Firewall's and need forwarding too, PortForward should list it if it does and static address guide too.

Ok well iv already set up Open DNS a while back by just typing the two ips into that section on my router.just like it tells you to.so im a little confused.Do you recomend forwarding a port.If so should i do the same procedure or a new one. I turned of my windows firewall too by the way.

For optimum speed, port forward to any port over 10,000 that isn't the default, over 50,000 for Azureus (their recommendation but dont think it matters as long as it's above 10,000) or range (if needed) and disable UPnP in your client if applicable. Here is an easy static address guide to follow: http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm and for forwarding your router, find it here, click on it, find your program, click on it and follow the directions: http://www.portforward.com/english/route...routerindex.htm

You bet but it wasn't easy. Though, getting more into Newsgroups now, no uploading. Bit larger download but only around 10-15%, no big deal. By the way, if you're not, look into using some form of ip blocker like PeerGuardian. Doesn't support Vista but they have a beta that does, Safepeer in Azuureus and an ip blocker in utorrent both do. None are 100% but they are good. Glad it worked out.

when I do not have it set up right, I peg out at exactly 30kbps, regardless of the number of peers...When I have port forwarding set up properly, I can get >400kbps, depending on available peers of course. So, for me at least, yes it makes a difference

I have found that this is simply THE BEST if you are looking for scanning and removing spyware and malware (especially those picked up through massive file downloading and sharing)
