You screwed the fista bootloader? Oh dear. Probably time for a full reinstall. Don't know anything about fista and it's bootloader except when it's damaged it's really bad news.

Grub on the MBR probably hasn't detected fista, or can't load it.. what are the OS root partitions?.. all of them.. Maybe we can work it out, but don't hold your breath with fista which seems to see any manipulation of the bootloader as piracy.

What does the fista blue screen say? return to retailer?

sorry.. I need to go and have a really good laugh at the mess ubuntu has made before I can come up with anything more sensible..

i fixed the problem with the VISTA the installation cd

i used the cmd prompt and ran bootrec.exe /fixmbr and that solved the problem

but thanks for the reply

i just installed grub to my master boot record time to format my external and retry

and the blue screen was from windows XP not Vista

it was because it couldnt load its startup drivers

this happened before i installed linux

Ahh right.. I thought you had killed the main bootloader. Phew.. close escape. BSOD on boot with fista is very nasty.. We direct customers to the original retailer for repair. We don't sell, install or repair fista..

sorry about laughing.. but it was really funny.. very lucky you have fista on a disk rather than on the drive as is so common... guard that disk with your life... make a few copies and lock them in a safe ;)

You should now be able to have a go at putting grub on the external drive and see if you can get it to boot ubuntu and xp.. If your hardware allows booting from usb in the bios it should be rather easy.. there are guides on the ubuntu forums for that. In theory it is as easy as installing grub to the mbr of the external drive and then editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to include xp.

Happy hunting. XP/Ubuntu is a pretty good combination for dual boot.

i was able to run ubuntu from the external when i plugged it in i really liked it =D
so im going to try again tommorow
