Hello,

I have recently been asked by a friend to re-format his old PC but I have now encountered a problem which I can not seem to fix.

During the formatting of the hard drive we left the room as being an older machine it would take a bit of time but when we returned to check up on how far it had progressed the PC had now turned itself off.

I now can not power up the machine since this strange shut down. I have tried plugging it in to another power socket which did nothing. I then tried a different kettle cable (power cable) which again did nothing at all. I then tried checking all the connection of the components and connections to the power supply which all seemed OK but again this yielded no positive result. The last fix I tried was to replace the old power supply with a spare one I have which after installing and testing again did not power up the PC but for a brief second the heatsink fan spins.

I really cant understand why the machine does now not power up anymore.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem is and how to fix it?

Thanks

Ross

Have you checked the cooler is still attached properly?

Thanks for reply.

IF by cooler you mean heat-sink then yeah I've checked all components to make sure that they are all connected properly.

Could potentially be a short in the motherboard, in which case replace that.

disconnect all cables from drives. remove all cards & ram except for videocard & stick of ram. reseat those 2. clear the cmos as have found that to work on stubborn system sometimes. check the silver topped can shaped objects on the motherboard which are capacitors that they are flat topped not domed & not leaking brown stuff from top.
