The absolute BEST WAY for you not to get caught is to just not torrent, you know they can find you right now. Just get your ip address of your account, and that is it.

They only can find you for when you upload, not download... yet. So you cold just not upload, but that ruins the moral of torrenting. Transmission (P2P client, lets you do this, but the downloads are slow as hell).

For windows, it would have to be Peerguardian 2, but I'm starting to have my doubts in it with vista. For linux it would be moblock, but that is a bitch to install, and even a bigger bitch to install the GUI. I use P2P programs for Linux Distros and FOSS (Free open source software) as it is much faster than downloading off a site.
PM me if you find a link to peerguardian 2 for vista, i'm using the one made for XP right now.

They can see your ip as part of the swarm.. even if you aren't actively uploading or downloading anything. people have generated takedown notices for network printers and hubs.. google reveals all ;)

fista and linux.. azureus with safepeer plugin.. Not 100% but better than nothing.. uses exactly the same lists as peer guardian.. avoid limewire/frostwire with fista.. there is no way to protect yourself unless you run a proper hosts file based firewall.. and that is very complicated.
moblock on linux very often contains the "university" ip's in the blocklists and screws up your software updates. You only need this kind of ip blocking software if you are doing something iffy.. there is no need to have it enabled all the time. (peerguardian doesn't work on fists.. somehow M$ have killed it)

Glad to be of service.. It was washington edu that did the research, and covered by an AD news item some time back with links. http://dmca.cs.washington.edu/faq.html

Peerguardian 2 does work with fista, it is still beta; better than noting. But if you can't find it, you're supposed to use the Windows 98 version as it doesn't have drivers.

but why bother using probably iffy beta versions or an obsolete 98 version when azureus works flawlessly on fista with a perfectly serviceable peer blocking plugin which isn't blocking 90% of the internet all the time.? The last thing you want is so called peer protection which isn't actually working.

peerguardian is a pretty poor application when used with p2p anyway.. only real use for it is attempting to protect users of limewire and those kind of tings. It's mostly BS to encourage people to use macromedias ”torrent which sprays packets everywhere anyway.

Hey,
Just a side note to the hiding your ip address discussion...
Yes, people do get caught, but you have better chances of getting hit by lighting then getting caught.
If you only torrent a few gigs per month, don't worry yourself with hiding your ip address. The police don't really care about a couple of gigs, they are looking for the big uploaders like scene groups.

All I'm saying is don't loose any sleep over this stuff lol :)

ACTUALLY, its more about what you do download rather than how much; if you download a few screeners or cams, expect to be caught, if you download a few licensed animes, dont expect to be. If you download a new released console game, expect to be caught, if you download a cd, expect not to be. I know people who have experienced these situations; one persons first download was Zelda Phantom Hour Glass and two weeks later he got a letter in the mail for copyright infringement. Also, you are more likely to be caught on a cable connection over a DSL connection.

True, True.
But again, if you DL, one screener... chances are your not going to get caught. Also, if you are using public and private trackers. If you use private trackers, the chances of getting caught are very slim.
