Ok, so i have called up linksys support at least 10 times and those indian retards can never fully understand what Im getting at. Here is what I want to do, I know its possible, but no one has been in my situation from what ive read so far. Thanks to whoever is brilliant enough to figure this out!
I have 4 pieces of hardware: 1 cable modem, 2 linksys wrt54g routers, and an xbox 360.
The modem and 1st router are in my living room, and the second router and xbox are in my bedroom. The modem and first router are both hooked up right now and are working perfectly. Here are the ip setting from the only wired computer on the first router:
IP: 192.168.1.4 (I started the naming at .4)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway & DNS Server: 192.168.1.1
DHCP: On
Now, as you may have guessed, I want to used my xbox 360 online, but I dont want to run a 200' ethernet cable through my house, and i dont want to spend $100 on the wireless adapter. so, I have the second wrt54g. I would like to set that up in my room, so that it recieves the wireless signal from the first router (like an access point i guess?)
From there, i would just run a 3' ethernet cable from one of the ports on the second router to the xbox. ta-da? so basically i want to use the second router as the wireless adapter.
If you had a problem understanding my description, here is a diagram:
Id rather not have to use 3rd party firmware, but if i have to thats ok. please go step by step, as close to english as you can. my computer knowledge is intermediate. thanks!!!!
Ignoring the bit about Indian retards, see if this helps - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/685002 ie i use DD-WRT firmware on 2 routers (not Linksys but Buffalo); however you can use a micro version of DD-WRT on the WRT54G routers (depends on what version WRT54G you have, i know the v5 needs to use micro due to limited ram, there are other versions of the WRT54G that can use full versions as far as i recall). Basically i run 2 Buffalo WHR-G54S's with DD-WRT firmware, one router is downstairs hanging off the cable modem, the other is upstairs with many pc's/xboxes connected (via ethernet) to it. The 2 Buffalo's talk via 'WDS' over WPA encryption. This increases range for me as a downstairs wifi router (neither a single Buffalo with stock firmware nor my old WRT54G v5 router with stock firmware) could give reliable enough/strong enough connections for everything upstairs hence the WDS setup over 2 routers.
