I have been backing up my dvds using dvd decrypter as .iso files, but have decided I don't want all the menus and extras.

I DO however, want the same DVD quality. What is the best way to end up with just episodes or movies with NO loss in quality?

Either burn to Dual Layer

or

Use DvdRebuilder to do the encoding.

I have been burning to dual layer with the .isos

Is there a way to backup just the episodes on a hard drive with no loss in quality? (without using 28gbs of space for each season?)

Yes. Rip Dvd9 to HDD with DvdFab Hd Decrypter.

There are a few variables that render that question difficult to answer.

here's another question

If I use dvd decrypter to make an .iso out of each dvd disc (containing 6 episodes), and then play this .iso with VLC media player...

is that the highest possible quality backup I can get and play on my computer?

a 1:1 is the highest you can get. However do a 1;1 , then play resultant disc on an upconverting dvd player. Maybe best you can get at the moment
