Issue 1 - When I reboot my computer I receive this message: "Can not find script file "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Temp\.tt1.tmp.vbs".
Issue 2 - My desktop no longer displays my background but instead displays a blue background with a message in the middle. The top half of the message has a yellow background and reads, "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer!". The bottom half of the message has a blue background and reads, "Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer". And I no longer have the Desktop and Screensaver tabs in the Windows "Display Properties" window.
Background info - The computer was infected with XP Antivirus 2008. I attempted to remove it by following instructions I found at Norton.com, but those instructions didn't fully reomve it so I installed Spybot and that seemed to remove it.
Thanks in advance!

@whiteshoe and Rob3458,
Both of you guys please do the following:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
? Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
? At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
? If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
? Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
? When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
? Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
? When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
? Please post contents of that file in your next reply.
Next Download and install HijackThis
Download TrendMicro HijackThis.exe (HJT)
? Double-click on HJTInstall.
? Click on the Install button.
? It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
? Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
? Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
? Hijackthis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
? Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
? Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Please post back with the MBAM Log and a HJT Log (made after running MBAM)

@Whiteshoe,
Whoooo Doggie, 4 Trojans, 2 Rogues, 1 Hijacker and 1 Rootkit but you are CLEAN now.
To protect your machine, I highly recommend BOClean. It?s FREE and it works. I use it and never get one of these infections.
In order to prevent the installation of Trojans and Malware on your machine:
Download and install: Comodo BOClean
Comodo BOClean protects your computer against trojans, malware and other threats. It constantly scans your system in the background and intercepts any recognized trojan activity. The program can ask the user what to do, or run in unattended mode and automatically shutdown and remove any suspected trojan application. Comodo BOClean currently supports more than 59000 malware items and offers automatic daily updates. Other features include updating via network share, tamper protection and stealth mode.
There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:
1. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
? Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
? Click the Empty Selected button.
? If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
? Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
? If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
? Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
? Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
2. Now Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.
Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.
The easiest and safest way to do this is:
? Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
? Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
? Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
? Click "OK"
Select the drive you want to clean usually C:
Click OK
When it completes the scan:
? Click the "More Options" Tab.
? Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
4. Defragment your Hard Drive
1.Open My Computer.
2.Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
3.On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
4.Click Defragment.
And here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:
Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
Enjoy your clean computer. Any questions?

@Rob3458,
Well, you are basically clean with one little kicker.
This line in your HJT log:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdztl.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdztl.exe
My research didn?t tell me much about this file. From what I found I would say that it is an Asian Rootkit. I have a lot of trouble reading translated pages. : (
To be safe, lets do the following:
Please disable your McAfee Scanner before downloading the following program. It may pick it up as a virus (it?s not) and can interfere with it running..
Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
? Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
? Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
? When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall.
Extra-Note: Please, DO NOT use ComboFix on your own. It is a very powerful tool designed to deal with sophisticated infections and if something goes wrong or you use it incorrectly, you could possibly lose the use of your computer. It is ONLY meant to be used under the direct supervision of a malware removal specialist.

2OG,
No other questions, but thank you very much for the expertise and guidance. I had read through other posts that had the same or similar issues, but it seemed that the solutions were specific to each computer so I thought I'd submit my own.
Best Regards,
Whiteshoes

2OG,
I actually do have a question for you. In the solutions you've provided above you've had us install some programs to help detect and remove malware and other threats. What combination of programs do you recommend in general as a "suite". I looked at andymanchesta.com and he lists a lot of programs but that's the problem, they're just a lot of programs. I've done a lot of web searching the past few days to find info to help me decide, but each program has its pros & cons and everyone has their preferences.
Thanks again,
Whiteshoes

That HJT line is just a sign that you have the rogue Antivirus 2008 and some Trojans.
I am very busy right now but if you hang in there I'll be back and we can clean you up...

You keep getting the same infection because you have a Trojan that is calling it in and you don?t have a 3rd party Firewall to block it. The windows firewall will not block outbound traffic i.e. a Trojan calling home.
Let?s clean you up..
Download ComboFix from Here
Very Important!

@ Oukeef,
You are getting infected as fast as you can clean it up..
This is going to take some time, patients and lots of work to complete so bare with me and we can clean you up.
To keep you from becoming infected as fast as we can clean it out please download and install this firewall.. You can change it after we are done if you want to but this one is simple and it works:
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1025_update/zaSetup_en.exe
These following instructions will not clean you but I have to get the 3 rootkits out of the way so I can find all the rest of the nastys.
Open Notepad - it must be Notepad, not Wordpad.
Copy the text below in the quote box by highlighting all the text with your mouse and pressing Ctrl+C
