The Sonys are still made in Taiwan. Very good success with them, but no more TYs. I haven't coded them, but they are very good.
For this week, I for one am going to Office Max and get 100 Verbs made in Taiwan for $19.99 rather than pay 3 bucks more for 100 Sonys.
I would rate them about the same in quality & reliability, but I won't pay $3 more for Sonys Made In Taiwan when I can get Verbs made in Taiwan. The Verbatim discs are a little "thicker" than the Sonys. But I like them both. I get better than 99% success with either.
Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

I'm down to less than 200 Sony TYs and was hoping. I've still got 250 Verb Taiwans. All are +Rs. I'll pass on any of them now, since we don't have an Office Max. I'd buy some of the Verbs at that price.

I bought a 50 pack of Sony DVD-R today in Target, $12.99.
I'll put the code in here when when I get a chance to check them out.
According to CD-DVD Speed info tab, the MID is SONY16D1.

That's very unusual these days. They would have to be Made In Japan.
There are NONE here where I live except the few hundred I bought a couple years ago. YUDEN000 T02, Sony Made In Japan 8x DVD+R. Sweet!

ALL the Sonys at Best Buy are Made In Taiwan. Not a single Made in Japan. Not at Staples either.
ALL the Sonys from Best Buy and Staples code as Sony D21. (DVD+R)

How good are these 16x Verbs? Does anyone have any info regarding their code, country of manufacture or reliability? I have had poor success with 16x discs in general and stick with 8x-slower, but better quality burns and fewer failures.

Yup! I bought some of the 100 pack spindles at OfficeMax today and they are MCC004, which I always get great results with. As usual though when buying media ALWAYS look carefully at the label for MADE IN TAIWAN. They had MADE IN INDIA spindles in virually identical packaging mixed in with the MCC004s. One thing I noticed to make it easier on my eyes looking for the Taiwans (rather than just trying to read the fine print on the labels) is that on the Taiwans the outer packaging stops short of the top of the spindle but on the Indian ones the packaging wrapped around up further plus (if I remember right) the India ones had a slight bulge at the top of the spindle.

I must be the fortunate one on 8/10/Staples sale I went to buy 100pk spindle. Noticed 50pk was just under thirteen dollars. Picked up a spindle MIJ, 8 spindles on shelf, stepped up bought all 8. Coded at home TY. I assumed wrongly that all were that way. Just got lucky I guess. Best Buy locslly was the same. Both 100pk, however was MIT.

You are correct about the Sony TYs. TY did not make any X16+R Sony according to DocTY's thread. Good find on the Sony X8TYs T02s. Did they have the octagonal spacers on the top of stack? Was a sure sign for TY Sonys. Down to the last 200 of "my precious."

If the Verbatim media are from Taiwan, CMC manufactures them. If they are from India, Moser Bayer makes them. The dye is Mitsubishi azo-cyanine, and Mitsubishi also owns the stampers in both cases. This applies to DVD+R and DVD-R.

Didn't you just mistype CMC for MCC???? My X16 Verbs are made by MCC! not CMC

If your Verbatim 16X media come from Taiwan, they were made in CMC's Lin-kuo II Factory. Neither Mitsubishi nor "Verbatim" manufacture media on a production line (as opposed to an R&D line.) As I pointed out in the earlier post, the MID code will be "MCC" because Mitsubishi supplies the stampers on which those characters are digitally encoded. That code appears no matter who uses the stampers--Moser Bayer, Ritek, Princo, Sky, or anyone else. However, the arrangement Mitsubishi has with CMC Magnetics is exclusive in Taiwan. All Verbatim DVD discs and CD-R discs made in Taiwan are manufactured by CMC. CMC. CMC. I've pointed that out for the last two years, but it's a hard pill to swallow for those who have been convinced that CMC cannot make good product. The major reason for poor performance of CMC coded products is lack of initial support in drives' firmware. The second reason is that the factory appears to sell off B-grade product rather than destroy it, and the B-grade shows up in no-name brands (but with the CMC MID code because it is part of the stamping.) There are also a number of other lesser reasons I won't go into.

Thanks for clarifying that which I hadn't seen before. Just goes to show you can't trust anyone in the industrial sector any more. I use fewer Verbs than TYs. I guess I'll have to buy the TYs on line when I run out of Sony's TYs. I see now why BB is giving away the verbs on sale almost weekly. So how do you, if at all, know if you're getting the good runs or seconds in any media brand??? I actually have some CMC Mags that play well and are copyable. Actually not one disc backup have I had trouble reproducing.

I realise this has nothing to do with the specifics of this sales thread but it is about CMC media. ..I have nothing but good things to say about CMC MAG M01 which i get in the Maxell 16x +R guise (which of course also turn up in the RICOHJPNR03 MID code), both of which i use in the 1000's.

If the MID code is MCC or MKK and the discs come from Taiwan, you are getting dependable discs. If the MID code is CMC MAG and the brand is a major known brand, you are very likely getting excellent production also; and those discs will likely work well on drives with updated firmware. However, there is continual pressure on pricing; and sales people have actually insisted in getting "B-quality" in order to compete with many off-brand or store-brand products that are lower quality. (Do you think there really are "Dynex" quality control people? In many cases, another brand services the store brands as a favor. I know of several examples, but the pressure is always there from sales people and even product managers who have to meet prices and may look away to help a store brand while being a bit more protective of their own brand(s). Even Verbatim has had to go to India to get some competitive pricing, although trade advantages are also a factor.)
Any factory worth its sale attempts to achieve 100% efficiency in order to get costs down. A production manager asked me once how much B-grade tape he should plan on in a particular month. The answer was, "Same as always. Absolutely NONE!") In a perfect world, there would be no B-grade; but every factory does produce some. The best factories produce the least, and CMC has made great strides in the last four years in particular. If you keep buying recognized brand names and check each disc for quality, you won't go wrong. It's the blow-out specials, store brands, and no name brands that are suspect.
