I hope I put this under the right section, if not just let me know and I will fix it for next time. (This is my first post)
I just recently started backing up my dvd's. I had been using Memorex, but after researching I want to switch to the TY's before I get any further but I am not sure which ones to buy or from where. I would also consider getting the verbatim...

Also - my burner is capable of burning with either + or -. Will one give me a better burn quality than the other for DVD backups? I haven't been able to find a definitive answer so I was hoping someone on here could give me one from experience. So far I have only burned with +R. Thanks! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. =)

I was thinking of these?

Start with a small number or TY 16X DVD+R media because:
1) TY 16X media are late to market and do not have the wide drive support Verbatim has for this rated speed. You'll need to check the compatibility with the drives you intend to use for recording.
2) The DVD+R format may be a better choice because it reached 16X speeds before DVD-R did. Much is made of the fact that the DVD+R discs can be bookmarked to pretend to be DVD-ROM discs, but that does not mean much more than that they pretend to follow the DVD Forum rules that endorsed DVD-R. If your playback equipment is newer than two years old, there is no significant difference in DVD+R or DVD-R.

If your drives do not work well with the Taiyo Yuden--after you have checked to see if their firmware is fully up to date--then you can rely on Verbatim 16X if you like. They are more widely available than Taiyo Yuden.

i use the Taiyo Yuden DVD dash R format since there less expensive on-line(valueline)than the DVD plus R format. used them for years without any problems so you might consider that if you want to save some money. supermediastore.com is definitely your best choice

Hey...Thanks for your help. I actually decided to just go with the Verbatims. I got a 100 pack of my 16x DVD+R from NewEgg for $41.99 with shipping, and a $15.00 mail in rebate. It also came with a 2 gb USB drive. MIT, MCC-004-00

I think I did good?

You did good, they are the cream of the crop. Congrats. Good deal getting the flashdrive as well, The Verbatims have only one issue when purchasing online, you can't be sure of the country of origin until you get them delivered. Some people are leary of the MII (India) variety and avoid them at all costs. I prefer to wait until someone has a sale on Verbs in a Brick and Mortar location so I can physically ascertain which type I am getting. I am chicken to try Indian disks until Joe Ryan gives the okay that they have matched or surpassed the Taiwan types.

Thanks. I definitely understand; if I had a store around here that actually sold something other than Maxell, Memorex, and such I would absoulutely go there...but unless I want to drive about 2 hours my only choices are Wal*Mart, FYE, & Radioshack.
