done virus scans etc not found anything except the usual tracking cookies.

PC runs fine, but whenever I click on a system folder, such as Program Files, or Documents & Settings folder, my PC seems to stop responding for a few seconds as if it is trying to find that folder or something.

Question is why is it doing this? All other folders do not cause this lag and when double clicked open straight away.

I have my 2 other hdds setup to sgut down when idle for 5 ore more minutes as they are rarely used. and if any1 else does this you know that when teh hdd is off and you click it it takes a while for the hdd to spin up. This is kindda liek the same lag I have on my main hdd, but that obviously is not set to shut down.

If you are using windows xp, it can be a problem with the video files thumbnails shell. If a folder has any video file in there, windows explorer will crash if it can't produce a thumbnail.

Description: When opening folders with movie files in them, windows explorer (the desktop) crashes.

Problem: This is a known issue with Windows XP's video thumbnail thing in Explorer. Being a thing invented by MS, it's buggy and doesn't always know how to handle things not supported by MS, and occasionally fails on things it does know how to support too. Every now and again it will crash and take Explorer down with it. Easy to solve thankfully.
Solution: Windows XP:

* Go to Start -> Run... and type regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

Press enter. Done. It's as simple as that. If you, for some reason want it back, simply do the same thing again, but remove the "/u". That is: Start -> Run... regsvr32 shmedia.dll

This will only disable movie thumbnails/previews, not picture thumbnails.

Another thing that will produce the computer to lag when you try to open folders is if the hard drives are set to PIO instead of DMA. This will cause major slowdown.

And finally if there are any files corrupted in the hard drives/ partitions that will produce similar symptons. You can fix this by doing a scandisk(with the box to fix errors checked) on all your hard drive partitions.
