I had a virus on on pc and the only thing that would recognize my Dell Gen.1 mp3 player was windows media player. I didn't realize it would place DRM protection on them. Now I can't remove them and place them on an external drive. Any ideas on software that can be used, thanks Brian.

I have seen a very excellent and long thread either in this forum, the ipod or the portible player forum but couldn't find it with a quick search.

I would advise using a process that remover the DRM directly. Many use audio capture to copy the audio. You should avoid re-encoding if you can. You will lose a little quality in that process.

I suggest NEVER use Media Player, itunes, Zune software. They all have hidden agendas, they make money selling you tunes. All are not above screwing with your music any time they think they can get away with it so you need to buy more.

While it won't remove them, you might be able to do what I did with DRM WMA files. Go into Windows Explorer and find the files you want to play. Highlight them and "Sent to"..."D:" (or whatever your cd drive is). After naming the disc, choose the option to burn as data (instead of audio cd). This at LEAST got them off my drive and portable. I have yet to try them in my car since I just pulled this off today.
