Okay, so I recently modded my PS2 slimline v14 (or is that v15 now? I bought it in May...) with some sticky tack to hold down the lid sensor behind the power button. That's it. The newer models don't have a sensor on the main board, so there's no chance that I messed something up there.
Anyway, I purchased Swap Magic 3.6 from OverstockDistributing.com, and immediately began to have issues with the discs not loading properly. The CD loads more often than not, but the DVD usually gives me a disc read error.
I'm still waiting for the company to ship me a new DVD, but today I thought I'd try sitting and hitting reset a bunch of times, just to see if the disc would eventually load. It actually worked on the first try, and I thought long and hard about which backup I wanted play. Afterward, I tried again, to see if it was just a fluke.
It sure was. After this, I didn't even get disc read errors. The disc just spun forever, with the laser in the same spot. I pushed reset for the final time, and I noticed something funny: THE LASER LIGHT DIDN'T TURN ON.
So I popped out the disc, examined the PS2, and saw that the laser was just sitting pretty at the bottom, near the spindle, totally inactive, while the playstation was on. I turned it off, and on again, and got no response.
I panicked for a little while, thinking about how SwapMagic killed my playstation, and then I sat down and fixed the dame thing (a push down, and a slow manual move along the tracks does the trick, by the by....).
So, I'm thinking there's got to be something seriously wrong with this disc. Does it not lie right in the tray? I mean, I know the usual plan of action when an SM disc doesn't load is to get a new one, and then test it on another PS2 to verify that it's the disc that has a problem, but I've never heard of a laser jamming like this before because it couldn't read a disc.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this in the not-so-worth-it adventures of using SwapMagic?
But it's fine now, and it's never happened before.... I figure it was only a one time thing because it was trying to read the stupid DVD (it's never had a problem with anything else, btw, since it's nearly brand new).
i've heard this before but im not sure its true: when u mod a PS2 u cannot play DVD VIDEOS (AKA: Movies) it's what i heard loads of times but im not sure its true...........
I have also heard this.... However, my PS2 isn't modded in the traditional sense (i.e. there is no chip.... I'm using SwapMagic...), and this still doesn't explain why a bad SwapMagic DVD (which should work fine on any PS2) would make the mechanism of my laser freeze up like that.
I should mention, however, that it's been working fine since then, and I've just resolved that SwapMagic is garbage and I'm not ever going to use it again.
