I just got swap magic 3.8, and I want to buy the right media for it. I've read that Verbatim is good, but I couldn't find any at stores. I found Maxell and Sony, which I heard were good and bad.

So I want to know if Sony or Maxell DVDs can damage your laser or not, and if I should buy either Maxell or Sony. If you have experience of your laser being damaged by any of these DVDs, please help me out.

I've already seen that forum and plenty others on this site, but I just want to know if anybody has actually had their laser get damaged from using Maxell or Sony.

Yes.. literally hundreds of times by people who just won't pay a few more pennies for decent disks.. They start off with a few quality disks, then they get something horrid like TDK and they work 90% of the time.. they keep using them even though they are having to boot up maybe 10 times to get the disks to read, and the performance goes down and down until the day when I get called to look at the laser.. by then it is too late... Some ps2 lasers are scarce and expensive... very expensive.........

Sony and verbatim can be good depending on where they are made. verbatim used to be made mostly in taiwan and singapore, recently A new manufacturing plant was made in india and the quality control there is terrible.

The first batch of MII (made in india) verbatims I bought had visible defects on the outer edge of the disc and the quality scans with nero were all over the place. MIT (made in taiwan) verbatims on the other hand were almost always with in an acceptable constant quality range.

The problem with sub-par media is that they will work for the most part and you may even get a few good burns that perform well in quality scans. All it takes is one bad disc and you could potentially damage/fry your laser.

Considering your going to be using these in a console I would recommend tayio yuden or verbatim. Remember the country of origin has more to do with quality than brand name.

tayio yuden are made exclusively in Japan but there are many knockoffs
I always get mine from supermediastore.com

verbatim can be found at many electronic stores, just make sure that they are not made in india.

Most stores will only sell packs of 50 or 100; it?s actually cheaper in the long run. For instance I picked up a 100 pack of TY 8x+r for around $45 (with free shipping). I?m almost down to the bottom of the spindle and haven't had one bad disc. When you buy quality media it's going to cost more... but it's better than taking a chance and having to worry if that next disc is going to be the bad one.

If price is an issue then read here for sales and info regarding media compatibility.
