when are they going to make dvd9 + and -rs available to the public?

and how do you guys think this will go? will there always be the DVDR 5 and the DVDR 9 will just cost more? or will the DVD9R eventualy take over like the 74(80)minute cds took over the 65minute cds in 97?

According to Maximum PC, they should be released this quarter but the drives will run around $1500.00 US, media around $10.00 each and the discs will not hold the same amount as a DVD-9. So yes, in a couple of years some of us might be using them. Just remember, currently there is no media, drives, or software availible. The release will be to media and software developers at first so they can get everything ready for release to the general public.

and its not a dvd 9 if it doesnt hold the same space as a dvd 9- and why should we have to go pay for a new drive when most of us just got a dvd burner and by the time we save up enough to by a new drive and $10 per disc BLUE RAY will be out!

As I understand it, the DVD-9-R's will use a dual layer system like a DVD-9 which may require dual focusing laser for writing or dual writing lasers. A simple firmware update may not be a sufficient upgrade. I may be wrong, but this was how I understood the format to be. It is possible that some newer burners were designed with the DVD-9R format in mind. We'll just have to wait until more information becomes availible.

Don't forget, hardware manufacturers make money selling NEW products not updating the firmware for OLD products.

As far as Blue laser goes, it will be great for storage but it's not a DVD standard so burning a movie to a B-L disc won't work with existing set-top DVD players.

There will always be a delay between new technology and practical application.

if it comes down to buying a new drive, i will wait till the prices draop and i will buy another no noame brand.

i bought a Ikebana Justlink 2.4x+r/+rw drive for only $150 after $50 rebate last january- maybe i'll find a no name brand dual layer drive. But i did see on this website (right here on after dawn) that pioneer made a firmware upgrade for one of there drives (not sure which.

but unless i can find another "chepo" brand- and dvd9rs drop down to reasonable prices- i'll just use DVD Shrink as usual.
