What is the easiest way to mod a original ps2? I am not going to do any soldering but read about non-solder mod chips and swap magic disks. What is the easiest way to mod the original PS2? I have noticed most of the mods and advice are pretty old was curious if there is anything new out!

I'm starting on ps2 modding now myself and this is what I've found to be the easiest. All I had to buy was a 15 dollar codebreaker from gamestop. I already had a usb thumb drive on hand.

I apreciate you time Copperkid! bare with me if you dont mind. I found this site after looking up the codebreaker: http://www.exploitstation.com/articles/codebreaker_exploit.php
ok so basically the codebreaker disk allows me access to my thumbdrive which will load the exploit onto the memory card. I understand that much. What does that exploit do? (what other software should i load up as well?) Will i need to leave the usb drive in all the time? or is that just to initially get the info to my memory card? will i always have to load the codebreaker cd, then the trigger cd, then a backup?
Like i said I am completely new.

I'm abit of a noob when it comes to ps2 exploits myself so don't feel bad about it. I'm just getting into it because I have people wanting their ps2's modded but nobody wants to pay for chips and installation in my area.
That guide you found is for the independence exploit.
You seem like you've got a grasp on what the codebreaker disk is for which is to get the exploit from the usb drive to the memory card.
On the freemcboot exploit you don't need the usb drive inserted to run the elfs from the memory card after they are installed and you don't need trigger/swap disks. The only catch is you have to patch your ps2 games in order for them to boot.
I think with the independence exploit you have to use a playstation one game and then swap it out with your backup.

I wasnt a member of that site and just realized there was a whole lot of info I didnt see until i signed up. was reading over the tutorial and seem to understand a little! once you have everything setup I might need to borrow your files lol

I got everything from the sksapps.com site where the tutorial for freemcboot is.
I've got everything installed on my memory card but I haven't had time to sit down and patch a game and burn it to test it out.
I'm hoping that if it works then all I have to do in the future for other people is copy the contents of my memory card over to theirs and be done otherwise I would have to go through the install process each time I want to set someone up.

I called my gamestop around here and they have that codebreaker for 14.99 so shoot i am going to pick this up and give it a shot. I will definetely have more questions when I go to attempt all this so be on the look out! Do you know or not if I was to move the memory card to another PS2 and plug it in would it work with no work? I guess that is what your tring to figure out yourself. Tried to find some sites as well to download backups for my games but when I clicked to download it would just download this small file but I didnt know what it was. I guess I will take it one step at a time! First things first let me get that codebreaker disk and see if i can set all this up. Definetely keep me informed on the progress and i will as well

Cool deal.
I got mine up and working last night with a patched backup copy.
You can't copy the files over to another memory card. At least it didn't work when I tried to do it.
But the memory card with the exploit should work in any ps2 once you get it working from what I understand it's plug n' play.

cool good news! i am going to gamestop on my lunch break so i can work on this over the weekend! impress my son lol quick question any good apps i should add while I am at it? Could I add emulators as well to play like nintendo games and things like that? if so would i need a disk of each game or could i burn like 50 nintendo games to 1 disk! sorry if this is a dumb question but would like to know if possible. my son has a DS with m3 real and i am still amazed at all the things it can do and I dont even know the half of it all.

i have it installed now but i didnt make the files accecible thru my main browser on ps2 but i see them on the MC is that OK? can i change that? also i am now downloading a backup of one of my games but man the download speeds are horrible is this normal? i am looking at a whole day to download 1 game lol

In the tut it mentioned something about renaming your esr, boot, and hdloader files so that they are called ESR.ELF, BOOT.ELF, and HDLOADER.ELF otherwise you have to go and edit your config. file to find the specific file name like esrbeta9a.elf
When my mc boots it shows
browser
ulaunch
esr
hdloader
freeboot configurator
If the ulaunch config you can set the buttons up to do specific functions. I can't test the hdloader until I get my fat ps2 back together though.
Make sure you get the esr patcher program and run it on your game iso before you burn it too.

I just want to say thanks for all your help i am prepared to test it all out. I have the MemoryCard set and waiting to finish a download. I didnt realize it would be so hard to get a download finished and the time it is taking. Once I have a game and patch it I am ready to go. If you have any advice on how to get better download speeds do let me know. I am using utorrent to get my downloads i dont know if that is good or bad. I just seen a youtube tutorial and that is what they suggested.
