you need to format your drives...thats what i did; once it booted from disc i selected to format the drives. after that, installation went smooth...be advised tho....formatting erases all your data so backup files you want from pc first!
then of course once xp installed you have to install your drivers n stuff...

have you tried 'deleting' the drive when you are in the windows xp install menu? The space then shows up as unpartitioned space...another suggestion...why not dual boot?

First step is to google the motherboard and bios version to make double sure it isn't a "vista locked" piece of hardware.. If it is you will need to reflash the bios first before you can install xp (or anything else for that matter) XD

You need a boot cd.. ubcd or techies toolkit or hirons with partitioning tools..
run the partition tools.. if one gas gparted the more the better.. and look-see if there is a system partition. If there is you need to take care not to delete it.. it will contain bios setting routines and stuff.
report back with what you find.. but don't change anything yet ;)

^^^??? I have installed xp on sata only hardware without any problems. Suppose it depends a lot if there is a hardware driver for the sata ports on the mobo or if you need to install it from a floppy or something before you can proceed. My guess is those kinds of things are what is usually on the hidden system partition. HP/Compaq have always been bastard machines to work with.. cockeyed chipsets and funky bios and drivers...

If you want to sell that lump of vista junk it would make a nice linux machine.. I'll give you £5 for it as scrap ;) Or you could install linux/run a live cd and see just what drivers you are going to need to get it running again.
But if people don't want to listen to advice then....................

When I installed XP on a SATA drive I hade to select third party raid drivers when the XP cd booted up and installed the drivers for the SATA drive from the motherboard CD. Once they were installed everything went great.
